Almost 3 weeks ago Kiwi went to the vet for some fairly severe flakes on his ears. The vet couldn’t find any mites on a skin scraping, but said all the symptoms pointed to fur mites & prescribed 3 doses of Revolution. The good news is his ears are getting much better. He still has some flakes on them, but many are gone and he’s no longer having clumps of fur come out of them. He had his second dose of treatment on Monday and today (Friday) I found a patch of flakes on his back, maybe the size of a quarter. They aren’t nearly as bad as his ears, but it’s still there. I’m thinking maybe this is a re-infestation? Is that even possible while they are still on treatment?

Initially after his first dose I scrubbed his cage down (he lives in the house), got rid of all his toys that weren’t plastic & washable, & began freezing his hay before feeding it to him. We do not have any other pets he could get them from, and I’m also vacuuming the carpet daily. I’m washing my hands when I’m done handling him, and making sure I use a lint roller on my clothes after holding him. However, I’ve noticed that as the flakes are falling off his ears, while some must be landing in his bedding and things, many are landing on his back, neck, & the sides of his face. I do wipe them off him every morning & night, but could those be causing it to spread?

How seriously should I be cleaning his cage & how often? Is changing out his bedding & cleaning out his litter box every few days enough? Or do I need to be scrubbing his toys & food dish, along with the bottom of his cage (it’s plastic)? Also, is there some alternative to his bedding I should be using now while he’s being treated? He needs something in his cage, or else his feet will just slide around on the plastic, making it very hard for him to get around. Is there a specific cleaner I should be using on the cage bottom? At first I used a mild vinegar solution, and then rinised it all very well. I would hate to need to take his cage apart every few days & do that. Is there a natural safe spray maybe I can just wipe it down with? I’m really at a loss for what to do, and he only has one more treatment of Revolution left. I’m terrified it may not work, and since he’s a Dutch rabbit, the last thing I want is to give him ivermectin, as there’s the worry he may be too sensitive to it. Any advice would be appreciated.

They can live for up to about 3 weeks off the rabbit. 3 doses of revolution should be more than enough time to get rid of them. I’m pretty sure like most mites, they are species specific, so they wouldn’t be able to live on anyone else, like the humans in the house since you said you don’t have any other animals.

If it’s possible with your set up, if you can keep him out of carpeted area’s it will probably be easier to get rid of them. Since any that don’t get vacuumed will be dead at the longest 3 weeks. As far as his cage, I’m not sure what kind of bedding you are using right now. But if you are using rugs, or things that are hard to wash, you might switch to some fleece throws for the time being. Those are easy to run through the laundry regularly. You can probably just get it really cheap from a second hand store and toss them after use too.

Any wood, wicker, cardboard, paper I would toss. Keep things a little on the sparse side for a few or keep toys things that you can easily toss after a few days use. Keep all your things that can collect mites/eggs out of reach during treatment as well.

Cages always have little nooks and crannies, so wipe down well, or if you can take it outside and pressure hose it clean or drag it into the shower and do so.

Hay, pellets, litter I would keep out enough for a couple days at most so you don’t have to waste much by cleaning more often than you would otherwise.

Keeping things simple always seems the easiest for me, with things like this.

as far as having to use ivermecin..I haven’t had to use revolution on my bunny, but I’ve used it on my rats and in the past ferrets and in my experience it works far better than ivermectin. Knock on wood, my hope would be it’s the same for bunnies.

If you are really really paranoid…You could move him to a completely different cage in an area of the house he doesn’t normally have access to during the treatment period. Then when you move him back you can be assured his normal cage is completely free of mites. Maybe a bathroom and a travel cage?

Thank you so much for the tips Mimsy!! I will definitely be keeping him off the carpet until the vet gives him the OK. Fortunately his cage is on tile flooring, so it’s easy to clean up regularly. His cage is actually a very large dog kennel, so I’m taking some pet safe cleaning wipes to clean off the plastic tray at the bottom. I also saw that flea & tick sprays for cats/dogs skin are recommended to lightly mist cages down to help prevent any eggs from hatching, so I added a little. And I’m using the absolute bare minimum of bedding needed now as well. Hopefully with thorough cleanings every few days the spot will clear up quick.
