Hi everybody,
I have found a bunny about 2 months old lost in downtown in June, and at the time, one of her eyes was already a bit watery. I took her home and then to the vet, but they insisted that I take her to the humane society and if the owner is not found than I can adopt her. She (Lily) spent there about 6 weeks being on antibiotics (eye drops and ointment) but that didn’t work. Since it was taking so long they kind of gave up on her and finally let me adopt her and take her to a vet myself.
For the next two months she’s been to the vet like ten times. They have done a culture test, found Moraxella and tried to treat it with multiple kinds of oral antibiotics + eye drops. Since the humane society said they did the duct flush, our vet just assumed there’s no reason to do it again. The teeth looked fine too, so they just kept her on antibiotics for a month saying it may take a while for it clear up. But that didn’t work. Eventually, our vet decided to to do the duct flush and see if there’s something in there. She managed to do it on one eye, but not on the watery one. She said that she couldn’t even find that tear duct!
After that, she referred us to an animal ophthalmologist. We went there but the doctor didn’t say anything new, just told us what might be the reasons for the discharge and suggested that they try to flush the ducts, too. Now I’m really confused and frustrated. That ophthalmologist didn’t seem to be very knowledgeable about rabbits and I don’t really want my bunny to undergo that procedure again, especially in that clinic (which is considered to be the best in the city). So I don’t really know what else to do… Nobody seems to have an answer. And every visit to the vet is so stressful for poor Lily.
So what we have today: a little redness in both eyes, discharge on the left eye. Other than the eye issue, Lily is happy bunny, eating well, growing and putting on weight, playing and everything.
I just wanted to share our story with you and see if you may have any ideas/suggestions. What else can we try?
