Hey guys. Long time lurker here!

Butter is an unneutered 8 year old male. He was diagnosed maybe 1 year ago with Pasteurella by just symptoms alone and given some antibiotics. I then moved and the symptoms persisted. I found another doc who prescribed some different antibiotics and nose drops. Butter would improve a little bit and fall back. I visited the same hospital again (but with another doctor) and he said it’s probably Pasteurella or potentially a tooth/root problem. He suggested an xray and deep culture test but I wasn’t able to afford it at the time. So we decided to try different antibiotics. During this time Butter really improved, his sneezing stopped and his paws less matted.. but it came back. Doc said that sometimes rabbits can just have Pasteurella forever and that we can keep trying different things. Butter got GI Stasis somewhere along this timeline (which was a terrifying visit to the emergency vet) but is all better from that. Last week Butter started drooling. We took him to a new vet and the doc noticed Butter’s molars were kinda long and irritating his cheeks. We made an appointment to get them trimmed and the doctor also recommended a blood test (which we did). Teeth were trimmed a couple days later and anti-inflammatory medicine and a new antibiotic for his runny nose was prescribed and Butter had stopped drooling! Hooray!.. until maybe 2 days later he started drooling again, he has a bald patch on his chin!  He also stopped eating hay and now only eat veggies and pellets. We called the vet about this and he recommended we continue the anti-inflammatory medicine and now wants to do a fecal exam. Is the vet just pulling our wallets? I haven’t read anything about drooling = parasites.

Thanks for reading! Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to be thorough. I added the tldr just to highlight important info.

Butter is an unneutered 8 year old male. Symptoms are: Running nose, sneezing, drooling, not eating hay. Molars were recently trimmed and drooling is still persisting. Current meds are Baytril Suspension and Metacam. New vet now wants to do a fecal test to check for parasites?

Um, I don’t know of any parasite that would cause the symptoms your bunny is experiencing. I really can’t think of anything. Your bunny’s symptoms are, however, consistent with a tooth root problem.

Did they notice any sores in his mouth when they trimmed his molars? Even if a sore is no longer being irritated by a spur, it could still be painful and causing him to drool.

And causing him to not want to chomp down on the hay. Does anyone know if an x-ray alone could detect tooth rot? If so, perhaps the x-ray coudl be more affordable than the x-ray and deep culture. I have my bunny Merlin x-rayed when he became paralyzed. It cost as much as 2 health exams.

Thanks for the response! Butter is eating hay and back to normal now, so I am suspecting he had sores and they needed some time to heal. I am bit annoyed the vet went straight to suggesting poop tests. I think I’ll start looking for a new vet now.

              Thanks everyone!
