Twice today, while laying at rest, Fox began making a soft grunting/wheezing noise. I tried getting it on camera but he stopped when I would go over.
When I tested his reaction to treats, it was normal (read as rushed to my lap, climbed up, happily ate the treat) He is drinking, eating, and pooping fine. And the Temperature has been normal. The first time he did it, it was only until I ‘disturbed’ him. The second time he continued to do it for the better part of an hour. Eventually he shifted position (from stretched out flop to loaf – then back to flop) and the noise stopped.
His breathing is normal and he is not trying to breath from his mouth.
Fox is a Holland Lop.
It does not sound like it is coming from his lungs, it is clearly coming from his nose/mouth. I have been watching him for sneezing and discharge, as his nose is wet, but so far mucus from his nose or discharge from his eyes. Sorry for all the questions, but I do worry. I know rabbits like to hide sickness. But he seems happy, even softly grinding his teeth as I pet him.
He’s had an exciting day – he got up early with me and really gave his new maze/tower a play in. This was the first time he played in them, maybe it was too much excitement for him. He is nearing month four – is it possible it is a hormonal thing?
Any advice on these noises would be helpful. They reminded me of some soft noises I heard him make once while he was a sleep.
Thanks for any help. I will add some pictures of him earlier today.
This is one of him sleeping in the hall around 2 or 3pm.
