We have a lactating mom and 6 babies, we are using alot of alfalfa.

Bagged alfalfa is difficult to come by locally. Petsmart and Petco get just 4 to 6 bags per week, if Im not there when the store opens on Friday, stocking day, they are all gone. I bought a square bale of alfalfa from the feed store last month. It was quite cost effective at $15 for 50 lbs vs. $5 for 6 ounces. I will likely start buying from Amazon for convenience. All of the reviews for alfalfa options on amazon are hit and miss. I feel so naughty, out there trying to “score” some hay for the kids!

My delimma is what to do about the dust that occurs from the leaves drying and falling off of the stems. This is true for both bag and bale, half the bag ends up under the litter pile, i had to shake clean the alfalfa bale that i got, so essentially only half the bale was useful. The dust made from cleaning it is no good for sinus allergies, it was incredibly messy. Maybe i could have tried the salad spinner Its difficult to store the bale hay, it is too large to bring into our home and our feed shed is hot and humid right now, summertime in Texas. 

What do you do for alfalfa? Brand you use? Method of cleaning it?
