        Morning all,

I am just preparing to bring my bunny home and setting up his room (upstairs for sleeping or when I am not home) and playpen (for during the day/when I am home but not supervising).

We have a whole heap of PVC pipe.. I am wondering if it would be safe to use for things like tunnels between cardboard castles and even as a makeshift hay feeder…..

Thoughts? I figured as most people use conduit to protect cords etc, then PVC pipe should be fine also…..

PVC pipe would be the ultimate cord protector, particularly if you used 90’s to take it all the way to the outlet. As far as tunnels, you *could* use but large enough diameter pvc pipe (8 inch min even for a small bunny) isn’t usually something most people have laying around. Also, pvc is pretty slick inside. I would think a better option for a tunnel or castle connector would be concrete form tubes. They’re cheap, and places like Lowes and Home Depot stock them in 8 and 10 inch diameters. You can cut them to whatever length you need with box cutters.

I saw a pic online where a rescue used pvc pipe made into a square to keep the bunnies from moving their xpens around. I thought that was brilliant!

Thanks JackRabbit, good point regarding the PVC being slippery, not a great idea then, will nix that. I do have quite large stuff, my partner has a terrible hoarding issue haha.

I am in Australia so we dont have Lowes or Home Depot and I have no idea what concrete form tubes are haha but that is ok, I am sure I will find something suitable.

            Great idea by the rescue!

We don’t have many cords laying about thankfully, most of those that are can be bought up pre-bunny coming home, the only ones out regularly are for the playstation, I am working on replacing our tv unit to one with doors and draws to keep the cords and other bits and bobs out of bunny reach.

Concrete form tubes are large cardboard tubes that are used in construction to pour concrete into to make things like columns. Concrete is poured in and the cardboard tube is cut away once the concrete hardens. Maybe they would have them in a building supply or home improvement store there?

Thanks JR – I will see if the hardware stores have any. For some reason I cant find them anywhere online.

You could use them outdoors partially buried. That would stabilize them and give some traction for running through. Buns like to have somewhere to hang out when outdoors, so a tunnel would be great.

                  What diameter are they?

I think PVC is safe… Ive used rectangular PVC downpipe in the bunny room to protect the baseboards. I cut them lengthwise so I got 2 “L shape” profile lengths from each pipe. The bunnies dont even attempt to chew at it.

Jersey Girl the big one is about 150mm diameter – I will be getting a mini lop baby. Good idea about burying it a bit. Im not sure how much time he will spend outside, it gets pretty warm here (Port Hedland so our winter daytime temps are still in the late 20’s.).

That is a good idea for the baseboards, I may need to look into that in the bunny room.
