I was woken this morning about 8 AM by her thrashing about in her pen and barrel rolling. Scared me to death thinking she suddenly had come down with head tilt or was having a seizure or worse. By the time I got her to hold still she was snorting like a steam engine and couldn’t straighten up. I took her out of her pen and put her on my bed and just tried my best to calm both of us down. Took about two hours and a trip out to the kitchen floor to see if she could walk straight, which at first she couldn’t.
She is listing to the right and yet not scanning or rolling anymore. We went to the vet and he did see some irritation on her eardrum on the right side. He thinks she either had a stroke or seizure or has an inner ear infection. She’s had bloods taken and was given baytril to handle any infection…standard operating procedure. She eats a bit here and there, still does her best to use her litter tray and drinks water, but you can tell she’s not feeling well because she didn’t even fight the nurses who drew her blood.
I’m devastated because it’s three years almost to the day that Mimzy got head tilt. I really didn’t think I was coming home with her alive today. I am still worried that I might have to have her PTS at some point. We’ll see how she does with the antibiotic, the last time I gave this stuff to a bunny was with Fiver two months ago and it almost killed him. He went into the worst gut slowdown I’ve ever seen him in and I was sure I was going to lose him before he turned a corner.
Pip just had a bad stasis episode last month. Ironically, just as my daughter and OH were coming home from her thyroid surgery…this time OH was just back from out of state last night. It’s a good thing it’s summer because I couldn’t have had any help from him with this. He is no longer a fan of bunnies and this just adds to the stress of the situation.
If there are any vibes going spare, could I please have them for Pip? She will have her test results back tomorrow and I am dreading what the vet is going to tell me.
Many thanks in advance! xx
Lots of vibes, Pip get well
{{{{{{Pip}}}}}}
Lots of vibes for ((((((((Pip))))))))
Thanks for the vibes everyone
Seeing a bit of improvement with the baytril, so just hoping it is an inner/middle ear issue. Although I can’t get the sight of her rolling violently in her pen out of my head.
Haven’t heard back on her test results from the vet yet but will call shortly after I administer meds this morning.
Only 4 hours sleep last night (yaaawwwnnn) I am beat to a pulp! zzzzzzzzz……..
More vibes for Pip.
Sorry I’m just seeing this now…. Poor little Pippi
How is she doing today?
She will be in my prayers tonight.
((((Pip))))))
Just checking in…sorry guys it’s been a lousy couple of days and I’m still reeling from it.
She really is doing better, but there are little things about how she’s acting that kind of bug me…like how she’s still holding her right ear down and one side of her face looks like it has a tic in it and she’s not eating and drinking as much as I’d like…and then I get a moment like right now where I just saw her really snuggle into her bedding and get in a comfy flop for the night, (then dreaming and twitching away like I’ve never seen her do before and suddenly waking and thumping for no apparent reason)…I don’t know…I have to talk to her vet tomorrow and see what he thinks but I’m guessing this was a hard one for her to bounce back from having just gotten through a bad stasis episode a month ago. She’s getting older and not healing as well as she used to.
Maybe it’s starting to affect her mind.
As long as she has her antibiotics in, it seems to help with the tilting and she hasn’t rolled again (keeping fingers crossed because that was awful!) but I’d sure love to see her eat and drink like she used to. I’m not certain if it’s just the baytril bugging her stomach, an aftermath of the rolling or a dental problem. If her ear is still hurting her I guess she’s not really inclined to eat or drink, but we’ve got hot weather coming and she’s going to need extra fluid. But she’s far too uppity even now for me to get sub q’s into her.
All in all she has improved from 4 days ago, but still not my Pippity Poo.
Thank you all for the vibes. I’ll try to be better about updating. It’s about 4 AM here and if my insomnia (and worry) will just let up maybe I can finally get some sleep! xD
I’m sorry MM, I completely missed this! Sending many {{{{{VIBES}}}}} for Miss Pip. <3
Im relieved to read you are seeing things calm somewhat.
like how she’s still holding her right ear down and one side of her face looks like it has a tic in it
Maybe something with the cranial nerves? Im not sure if these are involved with inner ear infections… Im just “thinking out loud”. :/
Mimz, more vibes for Pip! (((((((Pip)))))))
I read a little about vestibular disease in rabbits, and Jersey, it seems cranial nerves can become involved. I just read this: http://www.rabbit.org/health/tilt.html
It appears to be pretty common in elderly dogs as well as in rabbits.
How did Pip’s vet visit go?
Hope all is okay.

Sorry for not updating guys…I should’ve been clearer, I mwant I was speaking to the vet by phone. He told me to just be patient and let the baytril work and she does seem a bit better now. But we’re in the middle of a heatwave and so she’s not moving about much anyway. Last time it got this hot she had a seizure so I’m doing all I can to keep her and all the pets cool.
Thank you all for thinking of us. We’re hanging in there the best we can.
One thing I love to see is how she gets happy when I bring in dandelions from the yard. As long as I get that kind of response I am relieved.
xx
Yay for happiness by dandelions!!! Boo at Heatwave!!! ((((Pip)))))
Thanks LPT
Heard from her vet today, finally we connected after days of phone tag. He got her CBC results back (he’d taken two blood tests last week) and there’s nothing systemic going on, just mild infection, so it would appear it’s just her ears that are the problem. Shocking to me (but welcome news) as she was rolling so badly I thought for certain there was something else going on. But she’s doing well on the baytril and hasn’t had any further trouble, she’s eating a bit better and drinking okay-ish (it’s going to be hot for another week here at least…yuck!) but on the whole I think her attitude is good and I’m keeping my fingers crossed she’ll continue to do well. I think due to her age she has a long row to hoe, but I’m hopeful she’ll make a good recovery.
Thanks for vibes, they really do help. ![]()
I’m glad to hear there is nothing further going on. ((((Pip- ear vibes)))))) (I owe you lots of ear vibes)
Hi guys!
Hey LPT…how’s Mr. Bindi doing these days? I’ve been thinking about you all out there. Hope Ricky is having a nice Father’s Day.
Well, Pip is plugging along well considering how hot it is. 0_0′ We’re also getting a lot of smoke from nearby fires so it’s one of those nasty summers. :p
I do have a follow up blood panel scheduled for her on the 1st July, so we’ll be certain there isn’t anything wonky going on with her liver and kidneys. But I’d say she’s coming along and seems almost back to her old self. She is VERY wary about leaving her litterbox though and doesn’t like to spend a lot of time in it. I still think she came out of it wrongly that day and may have begun rolling not just due to ear problems but because she didn’t land right. Same thing happened with Fiver only a few weeks prior.
Whatever the cause she is once again being the diva and demanding attention and treats and any other fuss she can think up. She does get tired easily though and that’s to be expected.
Thanks again for any and all vibes!
They seem to be working!
Good to hear it!
I’m so glad Pip is doing well and almost back to her old self.
Bindi is good ol’ Mr. Bindi. Lazy and full of snuggles. Still on CC to keep his weight up. Still the same situation with the drinking/IV fluids. He’s going in for another dental on Thursday. Ricky had a really nice Father’s Day. We had these pictures framed for him and he loved it.
Oh my goodness, LPT, those photos are fantastic!
How has she grown so fast?? 0_0 What a beauty!
Hoping Bindi’s dental went well. As much as it is hard to get them to take it, sometimes I wish the buns would just eat CC (my hay fever would appreciate it!) because it would really save me a lot of time in clean up. (Not as much vacuuming to do that way!) xD Sending your boy quick recovery, eating and drinking vibes. xx
Bindi loves his CC. Not when he’s ill, though, obviously and unwilling to eat anything. But I give him 3 servings of it a day and he gets super excited. And Olivia wants some too….she licks up any residue that’s left on the plate if she gets a hold of it.
I agree…..hay makes such a huge mess. I can sweep and vacuum everyday and there is still hay tracked all over my upstairs. Oh, well….life with rabbits.
Yes, I can’t believe Evi is growing so fast. Already 9 months. I’m planning her 1st Bday party. It’s unreal!
