  My Vet class has a pair of rabbits that I’m taking care of over the summer. They’re sister Californians, about 1 year old and they were given to us because it was a life or death situation for them. It seems like my teacher just jumped head first into having them without doing any additional research. They aren’t bonded, the aren’t spayed and they fight yet they were still kept in the same cage together at the school. She didn’t even know what bonding was when i brought it up. I have expressed multiple times to my teacher that they will need to be spayed if they want to live in peace but she just doesn’t want to listen. I don’t know if shes just being ignorant or if she just doesn’t care but I care very deeply for them.
  
  Right now they are in separate cages in my home and I can tell they’re less stressed but how can I get her to understand how much they need to be spayed? I know she would do it for any of her other pets so why not these rabbits?

  Maybe try telling her about the very high risk of cancer, or the fact they will never be bonded without them being fixed. How they will probably become more laid back once they are fixed.
  
  But what I am not understanding is if they are her rabbits why isn’t she keeping them in her home over the summer? If this is an offensive question please just ignore it.

  Is your teacher a vet? That’s what I’m not understanding….why can’t she spay them as part of the teaching environment?
  
  Other than that, it’s hard to know WHY she won’t but all you can do is try to either educate her or just have another vet do and pay for it if it’s something you can do.

  Shes a Vet tech but I don’t think her clinic spays rabbits. They aren’t technically her rabbits they were this girl’s in FFA but she didn’t want to take care of them after the rodeo. I’ve told her the incredibly high risk of cancer especially now since they’re about a year old but I just don’t know what to do.. I might get a job this summer and put my money towards getting them spayed because if I didn’t I wouldn’t have the money. I’ll probably have to do it myself since I don’t think anyone else would.

  Okay, so it’s not a vet school? And she’s not an actual vet. She may not have the money to do this and well, that’s understandable. That’s of course the problem with FFA and it sounds like the vet tech is trying to help as best she can but sometimes it is an issue of money and you can’t pay for everything…
  
  Perhaps you can take some initiative and raise some money to get these girls spayed.

  No it’s not a vet school its a trade school with a vet program. I am going to save up money to get them spayed. Thank you for all your help I will still try to convince her to pitch in if she can’t pay for it all and I will continue telling her the health benefits of getting them spayed. When I bring this stuff up to my mother she only says, “Vets around here don’t do that” and leaves it at that but I have found some that do. Even if it wasn’t your intention thank you for encouraging me to save up money. I doubt I’ll be able to get enough this summer to get both spayed but I will still try even if it takes longer than expected.

  If they are “educational rabbits” you may be able to get a lower cost spay. Ask around with shelters and rescues to see if they know somewhere you can have it done at a discount.
