I am getting a midwest pen and I am having trouble with the placement of the door. Due to the way the pen is set up there will be a 3 inch overlap and it just so happens that one panel that overlaps is the door. I would love if The door could be on the other side of the pen but without damaging it I just don’t know how to fix it or if I can.

The “circular” points are where the panels meet, The thicker lines are doors. I tried to make it simple. It looks small but the cage is 27″x42″, the pen will be 6’x4′ I will have to slope the pen in 3″ on either side but it seemed the best way to give him the most space.

I never really used the door to my x-pens when I had them – they come with these clips that hold the pen together and I just used the clips to open and close the pen. I just never found the door easy to open and it didn’t open all the way anyway for me to step in the pen to clean or when I needed to get a rabbit.

Thats not really an option since those clips will be attaching the cage to the pen and I would have to mess up the entire pen to go in and out.

You only need to go in and out on one side and really once you figure it out, it’s not such a big deal….because either way you’d have to clip the pen together with the clips too….give it a try and see what you think before you say “no” :~) You might find it’s not that big of a hassle.

My worry is just that the liner is almost exactly the same size as the pen.

Well, I probably wouldn’t use the cage because it just doesn’t seem all that practical but I understand why you might want to do this…or something like it and I’ve seen people do it – not sure how successful they found it to maintain though.

The cage gives him an extra 7 sq feet, and will also be where he is kept the first week home to allow for potty training, as well as I can store hay on it ( A theory I plan to test) , and his litter box, water bottle and hay will all be in the cage. Without using that cage as one wall … His pen would only be 4×4 … So it adds the 7 sq ft of the cage itself PLUS 8 sq feet of extra pen.

I definitely like the idea of adding space but I guess I do wonder how easy it will be for you to clean the cage in this configuration….what kind of cage is this? Is the cage going to be against the wall with the pen around it?

It shouldnt be hard. The side door which leads to the pen will be removed. So that will be easy access I plan to ” swiffer” the cage … but using baby wipes instead of the chemical covered pads they come with.

It will have a couple inches gap all around so he cant get to the trim in the room.

And getting in to change litter won’t be hard. I am use to working with rat cages with teeny doors.

The cage is a XL dog crate.

Due to the other pets being put in the room and the layout of the outlets, I will have to only give him a 4×4 pen for now. but it should still be enough room for him. If not I will find a way to expand.

It is unfortunate that they put the door on an end panel, especially since one of their selling points is that you can attach their xpens to their dog crates. We’ll run into the same problem if we decide to attach an xpen to Kieko’s condo. We use the xpen doors because its easier for us than unclipping the clips up and down the panel every time we go in so we will either gently pry the metal clips open and reconfigure the panels to move the door panel and reuse the metal clips or use zip ties or (buy more dog leash type clips at Lowes) to reattach the panels after reconfiguring. I’ve thought about calling Midwest to see about getting replacement metal clips but haven’t gotten around to it.

well since I have to change to a 4×4 pen That solved the door problems.

I had a similar problem when I wanted to attach an xpen to the trouble bun’s cage. I used a pair of needle-nose pliers and took off these parts:

I took off the ones where the door panel was attached to the rest of the cage and the panels where i wanted to put the door. You only need to open it a little bit to take it off, and then you can close them back in place with the pliers when you have it where you want it. If you break one, you can always zip/cable tie it together, but it shouldn’t break if you’re careful.

I decided to sell his cage and just buy a second playpen.
