  I am a new bunny owner (I grew up with cats – this is my first bunny!), and I got my little Jubilee about a week and a half ago from a breeder. She’s a 2 month old Mini Rex, and is sweet (and naughty) as can be. When I went to pick her up from the breeder, he said that he noticed a small lump/scab on her right shoulder, and said that he thought it was probably an ingrown hair. I have kept an eye on it for the time I’ve had her, and a few days ago the scab fell off, and I could see the little lump better. It almost looks pimple-ish in it’s shape, but it doesn’t look like there’s anything inside that would come out if I went to squeeze it (as gross as that sounds, sorry). I picked at it a bit just to get an idea of what it could be, and Jubilee squirmed away from me after a bit each time I messed with it, so it must be a bit sensitive or painful to some degree. I read somewhere that ingrown hairs can develop into abscesses, which is something that I’d like to avoid happening! The lump feels like it’s just on the skin – there doesn’t feel like there’s anything underneath it (as in it being a “thick” lump), and I wanna say it’s gotten a little smaller in size since the scab fell off (although maybe it’s just my imagination). If its something that’ll go away on it’s own, I’d like to avoid that vet trip and cost (I have NO idea how vet bills are with bunnies – any insight to how expensive they normally are for different types of procedures/check ups would be SO, SO appreciated!!). The picture I have of it isn’t really great…it was hard pushing all the fur out of the way! If it’s something she HAS to go to the vet over, I’ll of course take her. I just don’t want to spend a ton of money if it’s something that will go away on it’s own or if it’s something that isn’t all that serious. Thanks so much!

  Hmm, it doesn’t look like an abscess, although they are a concern with bunnies. This is the only spot? It almost looks like a scab caused by mites.

  I was thinking mites too LBJ but it could also be a scar if she has been in with other babies and someone got bitey. Either way Northstar you are going to need to find a vet eventually and better to do so now than be scrambling about in an emergency trying to find an exotic vet in close distance or one that has emergency hours. Trust me, you will save yourself a whole lot of heart ache. Also if you have an established relationship with a good bunny vet you can often get answers free of charge by phone or be able to do drop offs and pick up when it’s busy and appointments are hard to get…. A base line check up shouldn’t cost you more than a basic consult and they could look at the lump. If it’s mites they could give an ivermectin injection or you could purchase some Revolution Puppy and Kitten treatment. NEVER use Frontline, it’s toxic to rabbits.

  Thanks! I’ll try to get her into the vet’s this week. I’m not trying to sound super obsessed over money, but I have no idea how vet bills are – how much does a basic initial check up usually cost around? I’d just rather get an idea now, than go into the vets office and have a heart attack there from not knowing what the price range for basic things like that are (if that makes sense).

  Without knowing where you are I really couldn’t say. The basic consult is pretty standard here in Western Australia barring a couple of vets that like to rip people off.

  I’m in Maryland in the US. My parents keep giving me the impression that vet bills will be hundreds and hundreds of dollars – but I think that’s because the vet they have for their cats likes to overcharge for EVERYTHING.

  My vet charges $80 for a new patient visit or a “sick” visit and $60 for a follow-up or “well” visit plus the price of any tests, etc. They are the most expensive in my area ($22 per bunny for nail trim — outrageos!), but I really really like them. I do spend a small fortune at the vet’s, but I have 3 bunnies and am a major worrywart with my bunnies.
  
  Its definitely a good idea to become an established client, and have bunnies checked over.

  My vet charges $40 for an office visit and $22 for a follow-up appointment. They will count two rabbits as a single office visit though, so if I take my boys in together I’m not getting charged two separate fees. I don’t live anywhere near Maryland though, so I don’t know. Hmm, Megabunny used to live in NY, didn’t she? Maybe she has a better idea.
