I found one or two places that said that a bunny would be a violation of the lease, because they only accept cats and small dogs… but many others state that they don’t list bunnies on accepted pets because they consider them to be on par with hamsters, guinea pigs, and fish (cage/tank animals). My current apartment complex doesn’t care how many bunnies I’ve got as long as I let them know and that I’m not breeding or selling them. They are aware that people let bunnies out of cages, but since they do have a cage they can overlook it. I would just ask the management up front if they would consider allowing the bunny in the apartment. Most don’t care, but every once in a while you get people that say no… and it’s better safe than sorry. You don’t want to have to hide the bunny just because maintenance is coming up.

Oh boy, I’m in the same boat. So many dogs/cats allowed and even more “rabbits are exotics and not allowed”. What I tend to look for in an apartment is that if they say dogs and cats ONLY, I avoid. Dogs and cats listed means I’ll prepare to ask, but probably expect a no (a lot of landlords think of bunnies as those super stinky, poo drops through the cage, chewing and destroying everything critters). My best luck has been with places that say “pets okay” or “pets inquire”.

So when it comes to pitching the idea of my rabbit to a landlord, I always put it in terms that are comparable to more common pets. “I have a litter box trained rabbit who lives in a cage. She’s more or less a caged cat in that way.” Because a lot of older landlords especially think of rabbits as those outdoor stinky pets, by emphasizing the fact that it’s litter box trained is at least a hop in the right direction.

I’m living with two cats right now and their owners, my roommates, make it awful. They’re not declawed so both of them have left giant scratch marks on all the doors and some walls from stretching as well as carpets being shreded, the male wasn’t neutered when we first moved in and sprayed, and their litter boxes are kept in the basement and, if we’re lucky, their owners clean them out once every two weeks. And in the end I think about my little bunny who uses her CLEAN litter box, her nails are kept trimmed and she digs for short periods of time only, and she’s confined when I’m not home so things aren’t being destroyed. How in the world is that worse than the cats tearing everything up and stinking up the basement to unusable degrees??

I would just try to get out the positive points: litter box trained, confined (even if your bunny wouldn’t be, if it has a cage call it confined, lol), spayed/neutered if applicable, etc. in one quick sentence. Sometimes landlords can be lax enough to allow it. Some, like my current landlord, very strictly follows the “cats and small dogs only” rule. Good luck! I know this can be a frustrating experience

Yes, often times landlords do not count “caged pets” as pets under the lease. So if you have a hamster, it isn’t something they are concerned about. If you’re having trouble finding a place, I would ask them about “caged pets” and tell them that you have a “caged rabbit”. Notice how I’m putting quotation marks around that. We all know you’re not going to keep your bunny confined 24/7, but the landlord doesn’t need to know that.

OMG Katrina!!! You and the BF and Tiger are moving out??? I am so excited for you! Is your mum going to miss you, or will she be like me when Denny moved out – I carried his bag’s to the door…. ha ha ha!

I have no personal experience BUT I have heard of people offering to pay a separate ‘pet bond’ to assure the landlord the your a responsible pet owning tenant.
And YESSS! I reckon the big one is STATE that Tiger is toilet trained.
Oh, and mention that unlike dog’s and cat’s, bunny’s don’t make noise, no upsetting other tenants (if your renting an apartment) or neighbour’s.

SOME bunnies don’t make noise! LOL! Granted they don’t bark, but little Kieko can sound like a demolition crew is upstairs when she throws a bunny tantrum. She will throw toys, pick up the edge of her litterbox and slam it down, even use a hanging toy like a door knocker when she wants something or something displeases her! Nothing quiet about that little diva!

If Tiger were to do that JR (and she wouldn’t – she’s a perfect bunny, isn’t she Katrina? Lol!) she can just say her and the bf were having a passionate fight! LOL!

PS – Keiko, your a naughty girl! Watch out… you may get a reputation like Henry! Is there enough room on BB for TWO naughty bunny’s???

My husband and I are landlords. Our pet policy is based on large dogs that have caused extensive damage and left us having to have the place professionally cleaned and exterminated for fleas. Our policy on paper is strict, but if a tenant wanted a bunny, we would just require a deposit that would cover things like dug up carpets and chewed up wiring, which would be refunded when the tenant moved if there was no damage.

Had no trouble at all, though my apartment is VERY pet friendly. All I said was I had bunnies and they were like that’s cool, I don’t have to pay extra for them either. It helps if you say they are litter trained and are usually in the cage except when you take them out for exercise. I would just be honest with them because you don’t want it to come back and bite you on the butt.
