RabbitPam wrote a fantastic post about nail clipping and I realized that a technique I developed with my rabbits doesn’t seem to be known, so I wanted to share it with all of you.   One of the biggest challenges to cutting your rabbit’s nails is clipping in correct proximity to the quick.  I always panicked that I was cutting too close/into the quick.  While letting your bun be your guide in making sure they don’t jerk their paw away when you apply pressure is a good mthod for most… I have had some buns that simply don’t react at all when I clip, and others that act like I am trying to saw off their whole arm even when I am clipping nowhere near the quick (drama-buns).  

Here’s another great technique.  Purchase a small but very bright flashlight (LED flashlights are great).  Moisten the nails a bit before you do this, then hold the flashlight directly under the nail before you clip and the light will “illuminate” the inside of the nail and you will be able to see exactly where the quick is and where it ends.  Most of my rabbits have had dark nails….. this technique works wonders for me.    Hope this comes in handy for you!
