  Powder had a flea on him last night. We don’t have a “rabbit vet” in town but we have an “exotics vet” that treats rabbits… but his knowledge seems a bit, erm, outdated?
  
  So, I called him up and he isn’t comfortable using Advantage or anything of the sort on bunnies. He suggested flea shampoo baths weekly with puppy flea shampoo. Which… doesn’t sound like a good idea for buns (soaking a rabbit down to the skin while they thrash about wildly sounds dangerous). Last time I talked to him he also had no idea there were probiotics you could use for rabbits. *sigh* And he’s the only one in town that even knew rabbits don’t vomit, so, I have very limited options on rabbit care!
  
  I know some of you have used Advantage and even Revolution on bunnies. What dosage and which type do they use? Or would you recommend a different approach to treating the buns ?

  I would not flea bath a rabbit or use sprays or powders. I always use Revolution Puppy and Kitten (selamectin), You can also use the advantage for cats but it’s a bit trickier to get the dosage right. For my big buns I use a whole ampule of the Puppy and Kitten Revolution as they are all 3 pounds or more. For Pepper who is a bit smaller I use about 3 drops. The instruction for dosage to weight are very clear and also suitable for rabbits. One of the products that is poisonous to rabbits is Frontline, do not use it under any circumstances. Vets can also administer ivermectin injections for flea and parasite control.

  Many of the flea baths for puppies and the sprays for cats contain pyrethrum which is bad for bunnies. There are some good links on flea control I will try and find for you and you could possibly email them to your vet. Let him know that Revolution and Advantage are both products recommended by the HRS http://rabbit.org/faq-grooming/

  Last time I mentioned House Rabbit Society he didn’t seem to know who they were and told me to be cautious “getting information off the internet” :s And yeah, I figured a lot of the shampoos would be toxic, that’s why I was like “Erm…” and didn’t take his advice. Beyond that, shocking a poor rabbit’s system and soaking them through to the skin weekly DURING WINTER no less just sounds evil. He at least knew frontline was very, very bad. So, he’s not totally out of the loop. Just seems to only read “official testing”, of which there has been none of most products for rabbits.
  
  Powder is 8lbs and Stickers is 6 1/2lbs. So, a whole tube of revolution would work for them? Some sites said the topicals require separating pairs so they can’t lick it off each other, would I have to separate them? And some of the local HRS sites say it’s riskier to use topicals with elderly buns, know anything about that? Powder is at best estimate 8, so I don’t like the idea of elderly buns being at risk of complications, especially with my vet being clueless about these things in rabbits.
  
  For now, I got a flea comb cause I wanted to wait to get advice from people who know about it. I’ve only seen one flea on him, he’s white so should be easy to spot more. And he loves being pet, so he sits there like “Omg, pets, oh pets” when I was looking him over then was all “WHERE ARE YOU GOING HUMAN!” when I was done haha
