When I was in high school I had a
rabbit named snowball, he was my best friend, playful, fairly well
behavior wise, only thing we ever had to pay for was food and
bedding. He never got neutered.
So when our boys were begging for a
pet- we thought to get a rabbit. My boys are 7 & 9 years old and
mostly well behavior wise– old enough for the responsibility to
care for a rabbit. All through my husband and I did not kid ourselves
either about how we might end up caring for it. We did not just run
out and buy a rabbit right then and there. We knew the set up would
be expensive and did research on where the cheapest cages would be.
We decided to get the boys a rabbit for a Christmas present – that
way we could offset the cost into that of Christmas. We started
talking to everyone about what we were going to do, and decided to
get a rabbit before Christmas would be best so that way there would
be less stress during the holiday.
Our neighbors had a rabbit they
were sick and tired of that was getting neglected. Their rabbit was
Coco a 2 yr old dwarf and very soft and friendly. The neighbors
remarked how nice she was to me in letting me hold her and trim her
nails. When I first met her, coco had nails so long that they were
impeding her hopping – even before we agreed to take her I had
trimmed her nails twice to get them down to size (she never bit or
scratched me). We agreed after some thought to buy her from the
neighbors. I spent 2 full days cleaning her cage it was so dirty.
Coco herself was very dirty when I rinsed her out with plain water it
turned brown. She was well feed however and otherwise cared for. She
was a joy to be around and have running around the living room. We
weathered some chewing problems and problems going under furniture.
well her full name was coco bun bun but everyone called her coco. right now we are dealing with some stuff about her – but I have other threads about that.
snowball my first rabbit was a mini lop wheres coco is a dwarf. those 2 rabbits are like night and day. I am trying not to compare them so much. but having coco certainly makes me miss snowball. but snowball had a good long life and died at age 10. if I ever get around to posting pics – I will have to post one of my favorite pics of snowball. the pic is of him jumping off my bed and he is in mid air. snowball used to lick my nose and stand up for cherrios.
