I am no expert on this but I imagine that you would have the same quarantine even if you change planes in another EU country other than the UK since your first flight originated from Australia. You are going to have to have a vet certificate to bring your rabbit into any country which will show your rabbit came in from Australia.

There is no rabies shots for rabbits in the US but I’m not sure about Australia.

I imagine the reason for the quarantine is Myxo.

Yeah here in the UK we have issues with Myxo, but we also have a vaccine. Don’t quote me on this because I am certainly no expert but I believe you need a pet passport these days to travel internationally with any animal, in which case you would probably still have to have the quarantine because as Sarita says the papers would state that you originated from Australlia. It would also be a really long flight for a rabbit its over 20 hours I believe and you usually need to land somewhere else in the middle which could cause problems. You need to research this thoroughly as moving rabbits back and forth through Australia is perilous due to restrictions. I would hate for you to get your bunny over there only to have to leave him behind when your returned. Firstly try emailing Australian Customs regarding travelling through as I am assuming Australia would be a stop over not your point of origin.

I think the bigger concern would be bringing your bunny back to Australia. The last time a member asked it looked like the only way you can bring a bunny into Australia was through New Zealand. The only way to bring a bunny into New Zealand was from Australia (unless something has changed).

Some UK quarantines can be done at home if they are “cage animals” so call the embassy and ask. You essentially work with your vet to verify the animal has been quarantined in home and not had contact with other animals (I know someone who did that with their parrot since it was a cage animal). Otherwise, I believe it is Germany and a few other countries have less strict quarantine procedures and you can then get an animal in from there, with the proper certificates/papers. I know someone that originally flew from the states but landed in another country first, spent a little time there, then traveled on to avoid the quarantine… but I am unsure of exactly which country she flew into. I *think* it was Germany, but I can’t be certain. It was years ago.

But, yeah, Aus sounds strict on bunnies so you want to contact your own embassy to make sure you can get the bun BACK with you when you return.
