› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › 10 hour road trip- OH to NY, so many worries
I’m driving from OH to NY and then back again for a week-long fall break and I’m bringing my bun with me. It’s a long drive, usually nine hours but we tend to stop a few times (its a bus that my school runs), so it tends to be about 10 hours. I’m looking into flying with her (I’m going to get her registered as a service animal as soon as I can) but I can’t make it this break because I need to get health papers for her and can’t until she sees a vet at home since I have no transport ability here.
I have a kennel for her, its a little small but its really the largest I can fit on the bus. I’m curious about any recommendations for food/water on the trip. I was going to offer her water halfway through because I dont want her to have to pee. Anyone ever taken a bun on this long a trip before? anything I can do?
I don’t have any recommendations other than puppy pee pads that we use in our carriers for vet trips. You can change the pad as often as you need and it’ll keep her from sitting in pee. I would think even halfway would be too ling for her to be without water. Can you attach a water bottle to the carrier? She’ll also need to have hay in there with her during the trip (Oxbow hay stacks may be an option).
JR keeps answering all the ones I want to respond to tonight LOL!
I just moved from NY to SC…15 hour trip. We had food and water and hay in with Gus for the trip, but I don’t believe rabbits actually eat much if anything while the vehicle is moving, but you have to try. Bring some goodies…even it they’re treats (maybe those timothy treats). Actually, I didn’t except for some greens, some of which got eaten. It’s possible he won’t pee at all anyway. We stopped halfway along and put Gus in a grassy area in a puppy pen and he pooped a bit, but I don’t know if he peed at all. I do know, when we reached the hotel and I put him in the pen with his litter box he LEAPED in!
Puppy pee pads or old towels you can toss out if necessary are probably your best bet. Hopefully yours will pee. I was so worried Gus would get a bladder infection or something from the stress. Fortunately, he settled in fast when we reached the hotel, then onto the new house. If they have some of their old surroundings you’ll probably be fine.
Sorry Megabunny!
I just moved from NY to SC…15 hour trip.
This is roughly the reverse of what we did; We just moved to the northeast from SC, and it was roughly 14 hours. We broke it into 2 days so that we could stop overnight and let our bun and cat relax for the night. Oddly enough Peter took it much better than his feline girlfriend.
We had them in the back seat in large cat carriers. Inside his carrier the bottom was lined with a soft towel that we could throw away if needed. In the back of his carrier I had a small tray of his litter nestled into place by the towel. I also made sure that he had some fresh greens and hay in with him. We stopped a couple times to make sure that he was eating his greens and not stressing too much ( I had an igloo cooler with bagged ice and fresh greens in it so he would have cool wet greens along the way). Pete pooped in the litter but didn’t pee until he got to the hotel.. then he peed a river!
All of your buns amaze me. Marlee can’t even go a couple of miles to the vet without either peeing on the way there or the way home. I think she starts crossing her legs and “saving” it as soon as she hears the word “vet”.
Edit: Oops, I’m wrong. Last time she waited until we got home and immediately peed all over the fleece in front of the litterbox, gave me the evil eye, then jumped in the litterbox looking very pleased with herself. I swear the little stinker planned it.
JackRabbit , you just made my night. I can completely picture the bunny-vengeance going on.
Pete is generally under the odd impression that if he goes to the vet he can’t poop or pee until he gets home; but once he’s done his business he generally has to let us know every single item that is out of place within his reach and give us the stink eye until we fix it.
Cottontail — My two girls are so much like high school girls with their little head games! Moshi’s just happy go lucky. I don’t have to worry about things being out of place with Moshi — he’s the one who rearranges everything. I never know where I’m going to find things in the morning! At least now that I found heavy duty velcro, I know where to find the litterboxes!
Cottontail, You left SC for the NorthEast? Hope you buy your winter clothes soon! We love it here and never want to leave!! Hope your move is a good one. There are benefits to the NE that we sometimes miss.
Cottontail — Wait until next Summer when Megabunny sitting in the South’s wonderful humidity and see if she still feels the same way!
Everyone’s suggesting what I would, I drove mine from Florida to Kentucky and back. The main problem I had on the way down was that Asia wouldn’t drink anything during breaks on the 11 hour drive. What I ended up doing to keep her hydrated was dipping a carrot in water, letting her get one nibble, then dipping it again, nibble, etc. I know carrots aren’t that healthy, but neither is death by dehydration haha.
My buns hate traveling, as soon as they see the kennel they run. I have to keep it out of sight until I catch them to put them in it. Such stinkers.
Megabunny and JackRabbit, I will not lie.. I am going to freeze. lol. I haven’t seen real snowfall in over 20 years of being in the south. On the other hand, I’m not going to miss the days when the AC goes out and the low for the night is a 87 with a 93 heat index. Pete had a cold compress wrapped in a pillowcase for a waterbed, and Zoey was “melted” onto the cool tile floor with ice-cubes in her water.
Mega, I highly advise in investing in thermal window coverings and weatherstripping doors and windows; they’ll do wonders for your power bill through most of the year.
Um…LOW of 87??? Nobody told me that! Guess I better get some tiles to put in the freezer before next summer just in case.
Very funny JR.
I just saw a picture of Fall colors in NC, so guess we’re missing that show by one state.
Thanks Cotton. I will pass the word along to the boss 🙂
Diana, that’s a REALLY good idea about dipping carrots in water. I like that, though I hope I don’t need to know it anytime soon.
Megabunny — I get so jealous when it’s summertime here and my friends in the north don’t even need AC. I start sweating the second the humidity starts in April and keep going until it calms down in October. We’ve had a super mild summer and fall this year, but the south’s humidity is horrible. A couple of years ago when we were doing college visits with our son, I ended up back in the car with the AC on full blast — had my shirt stretched up over the AC vent at one point and I truly did not care who saw me!
Snow, hmmm. Every so often we get dumped on. I have insurance that it won’t happen again (hopefully) — after the last one, I bought a snow thrower! Since I’m a bit north of you Megabunny, now that I have my snow thrower, you should be safe from heavy snows! I can handle the cold weather. As hot natured (and hot flashed!) as I’ve become, I don’t even wear a coat unless it gets down in the teens, and then only a polartec jacket. I did buy a quilted looking winter coat last year so that I could say I own a coat! If I ever retire, Vermont here I come!
Vermont? Funny I always thought I’d retire to Chincoteague (sp?)
Yep, Vermont! My college roommate (grew up in Virginia) moved up there after college. She owns a couple of health clubs, looks gorgeous and young, doesn’t need AC, etc. I look like an old sweaty rat in the summer, so I want to move up there and look like her! LOL! My hubby wants to move to Texas when we retire, so I guess we’ll be having a long distance relationship then!
Chincoteague . . I always think of that as horse people island. Still Virginia. Still humid!
Sorry for hijacking your thread JF!
We better retire to the chat thread!
i’m not really sure what advice to give you since you are on a bus, correct? are you able to make stops? or is there a schedule to follow?
When in a car, it is suggested that the carrier isn’t too big because in case a sudden stop occurs, it might injure the bunny. If the cage is smaller, it reduces the risk of the bun flying around inside.
I ask about the stops because in my own experience, Flopsie does not eat during the drive so it is nice to take a break, and give her something to much on and drink.
I tend to have her sitting in a pile of hay, also I have a little bungalow for her to hide in during the trip.
Also, I’ve never seen poop, but pee definitely does occur. The few times i’ve taken her on a trip, she pees immediately so watch out for that.
Good luck
