1- My pen has a few layers of towels on the bottom, with either fleeces, fluffy mats, dog beds, etc. on top. My rabbits are prone to sore hocks (if your rabbit thumps a lot, has long nails, sits oddly putting too much pressure on one spot, has hard flooring. These things can cause your rabbit to get painful sores on the bottom of their feet).

2- Yes, I would put a bed. My rabbits currently have an old comforter in their pen. I reccomend ecofriendly dog beds/mats. Don’t buy something really expensive though as your rabbit may chew this up. Lol quick story…. I have this big green velvet cushion that was in the “bunny room” for some reason. The petsitter came and put it in the buns pen thinking it was theirs. I came back the next day and my favorite mat was urine stained and chewed up.

3- Maybe you can put something heavy on the edges. If you decide to put mats/fleece down though, it provides grip for the pen and it is harder to move.

Yeah, fleeces are safe (for your bun to chew and such), as long as your bunny isn’t constantly actually eating them. Provide something else for your rabbit to chew. My rabbit’s LOVE Snak Shak logs.

I have my Bun’s pen in the kitchen on linoleum flooring. No base, just the floor, the surrounding pen is makeshift from grid shelving units.

So here are some questions I have…maybe I can possible improve her living space.

What is the flooring like in your cage/pen?

Should I put a bed in there for her? If so, what material? 

Because BunBun’s pen doesn’t have a set base on the linoleum, she can move it around my kitchen. How to prevent this? 

Any other advice on setting up a pen/cage?

1. I bought laminate “hardwood” tiles from LumberLiquidators.com for $15. Looks great and is easy to clean! On top of that, though, I have a layer made up of a few cotton towels, to provide a little cushion.

2. A true bed isn’t really necessary, but a nice spot to go where she can feel safe, out of view with cover overhead, will provide her with a comfortable space to sleep.

3. You can try all sorts of things — bricks on the sides come to mind, or you could fasten the sides to something using twist-ties, or you could figure out another configuration so she can’t move it.

For my NIC cube, I have a wood floor with stick-on vinyl tiles I got from Home depot. The tiles are waterproof but supposedly between the tiles are not, so hopefully the wood does not degrade a lot over time if water seeps through the cracks. The tiles were very easy to put on! The Home Depot person said that linoleum flooring was better but it only came in a lot larger quantity and was more pricey, so I ended up going for vinyl.

I put some fleece/towel on top of each floor so my bunny can walk (too slippery otherwise). 

My bunny and condo are very new and still under construction. So far, I have the base floor with “granite” shelf liner (like what you buy to line your kitchen and bathroom shelves with). It’s non-absorbent and very easy to wipe down. On top of that I have the “grip” shelf liner. I bought that to provide traction and very little cushion. It’s also machine washable!!!

We have built a second story to go into the bunny condo, but I haven’t decided if I’m going to line it. I will probably line everything in the “granite” shelf liner for water proofing and easy cleaning. But for the second story I’m thinking I like the fleece idea. I’ll probably end up adding some to the lower level also, just for comfort. My bun is litter trained for urinating, but still poops all over the place, so I’m not sure I want bunched up fabric in there. I may staple it down on the sides.
