I’ve had Toby for about two and a half months. a 1.5 yr old rabbit –unknown mix breed
Last night Toby was completely normal. In the mornings he’s usually waiting patiently (somedays not patiently…) for me to open the cage doors for his morning bouce-about.
But this morning was completely different. He was hiding out in the corner and was not enticed by anything that usually gets him excited. I felt his body and ears and they were colder than I have ever felt his body. When I was able to get him out of the cage, he’d just run to any corner of the room and lay down (this is normally his binky time — so you can imagine my worried wart mind setting off alarms).
The husband had to stay at home today to work, and I thought about let Toby work out whatever it is, whether it be gas bubbles or just something tough he’s trying to digest, at least hubby will be home to look after him. But the cold ears set off a signal, and I thought it would be best to take him to the vet.
As I had to head off to work, he’s at the vet’s right now, and they’re force feeding and warming him up in an incubator and keep him overnight just to be sure. X-rays were suggested, but I wasn’t sure if it was necessary so I passed on it. The vet thinks it’s gas, but without an x-ray they can’t know for sure. On one of the vet visits, we did xrays, and the vet charged for a 2nd
xray on day 2 that we didn’t know about but had to pay for anyway, so this is why
I passed on it this time, but I’m not sure if that was the best choice
on my part…
The unfortunate thing about living in Canada, I can’t seem to find an exotic animal insurance provider!
I feel like he’s gone to the vet so many times since I’ve had him (it’s only been a little over two months — and he’s been to the vet at least 3 times for an overnight stays), I’m hoping I made the right choice and that I am not wasting my money when I could do it at home.
Am I being an over-cautious pet mom?
