  Got our bun (Fatty Lumpkin) spayed on Tuesday, today is Thursday morning, 5 am. She was eating greens yesterday and she pooped and peed a couple times, but haven’t seen her drink water yet. I squirted some into her mouth with a syringe.
  
  She has been quite alert and active, moving around her cage occasionally and at one point yesterday she walked to the bathroom (one of her favorite hang outs).
  
  I woke up at 5 am to hear a huge crashing and Fatty Lumpkin running around our apt (she threw herself into her cage door to push out of it). I ran out, she crashed into my leg and bounced off and kept flying around, and then she ran head first into the metal coffee table legs and got knocked unconscious for a second. We caught her then and put her back into her cage and called the vet.
  
  He told us she was just in pain and looking for a way to get relief, and told us to give her another .5 mg of Metacam. We’ve done that and she has calmed down again, but what the heck! I haven’t read about a FRANTIC rabbit after spaying at all! I’m so worried sick, both about her knocking herself out and possibly damaging herself more by running around. She looked so scared and actually insane.
  
  Please give us any advice you can! As I said, we got in contact with our vet immediately but we don’t feel like his advice addresses our concerns that she is a part of the family.
  
  Me and my husband are going to double team staying home from work tomorrow to monitor her.

  There are others here better qualified to reply. Just wanted you to know completely understand your concern as she is INDEED a family member. Sending positive (( )) energy to you both and Fatty Lumpkin. Poor thing. Please keep us posted and hope her situation improves quickly.

  Hopefully it was just an isolated incident. I have never heard that a behavior such as this was a way to relieve pain. I guess I would say just continue with the metacam and keep her confined in her cage for the next few days.

  Sarita – thanks for the advice. I also contacted the breeder, and she suggested that she might just be really disoriented/frightened from possible side effects of the anethesia or meds, so she isn’t relaxing. We’re going to cover her cage with a towel so she feels more closed in. We don’t have a good hidey-hole type thing for her yet so thats next on my list.

  Definitely continue to follow the advice of your vet. How awful! I’ve never heard of such a thing, either. Having a hidey house will help her feel more secure, but until then, doing the towel thing should help a lot in terms of calming her down. Yikes! Sending good thoughts your way.

  Oh my goodness, what a scary way to wake up!
  
  I wonder if it’s unrelated to the spay, if some really strange sound or smell set her off and running? I’ve never heard of that happening after a surgery, and the drugs for the surgery should have worn off. Usually a bunny in pain hides, grinds teeth and lays down. Anyways, whatever it was I hope you have no further incidents! Sending {{Healing Vibes}}

  Thank you everyone for your sweet and encouraging responses! They really helped keep me sane today.
  
  Fatty update (day 3): she did really well today, and we kept her on a low dose of Metacam for most of the day instead of just one big dose at bedtime. She is still shockingly lively though– we have to give her love from her gate and stop her from adventuring out. She also gave lots of cuddles and kisses, it’s really the opposite of everything I’ve read about recovering from a spay.
  
  She is eating kale, basil, mint, and Timothy hay, just barely drinking. Her poops look a little misshapen but I figure with everything she’s been through they’re bound to be out of the ordinary.
  
  We also covered her cage in towels to keep it more peaceful and added a cardboard box to her cage for hiding.
  
  It’s 10:30 and we’re going to bed — praying we get through the night uneventfully.

  Thank you everyone! Fatty Lumpkin is doing great now and she gets her stitches removed in two days.
