Ok, Stickers has had 5 URIs since November. The vet thinks it is most likely pasturella. We haven’t run a culture yet because he said they often return false negatives if the symptoms are not present in the rabbit and her symptoms take so long to present something easily tested (discharge) that I don’t really want to wait and do that and if it’s a “It might say yes, it might say no, but even if it says no it’s likely that’s what it is” the $150 test I am not sure about. Will probably run it during her next yearly physical ( few months from now ).
Baytril takes ALL symptoms away for 2-3 months at a time. But, it comes right back.
I am looking for information on how pasturella tends to progress in rabbits. The vet said it often leads to abscesses and begins to infect other systems than just respiratory. I read somewhere reducing pellets can help keep it at bay. Think that would help?
All I can find is the basics “This is what pasturella is” on my google searches so far, I am trying to find more something like what to expect and how long a rabbit may live with it, how long until the first antibiotic might stop being effective (I assume taking it to so often will cause it to eventually stop working as well as it does now), what other owners have done to help their bunny keep symptoms down, etc.
Anyone know a good source for finding that information?
