I have one shelf that is wire. When my Bumpy occupied the kennel with that shelf in it, I had a sea grass mat on it, covering about half. He still had the option of laying 100% on the wire if he chose to, or sitting on the grass mat. Most times he sat on the mat, but frequently he would stretch out on the wire alone.
Fast forward to now, Bumpy’s access to the kennel is blocked off, and a new bunny, Clyde, occupies that space (temporarily). Clyde started off with the grass mat also, however he’s a HUGE chewer, so the mat lasted like a day. Now that shelf has nothing on it, and Clyde lounges on the wire. I’m not too concerned about it, because he has the bottom floor (plastic) and his cardboard tube or his litter box filled with hay to rest in.
If I had a situation where it were all wire, I probably would add a piece of indoor/outdoor carpeting, and secure it where he couldn’t grab the edges and chew on it. The carpet piling is so short he wouldn’t be able to chew it and its pretty tough stuff, so digging it shouldn’t cause it damage either.
