So my new Bunny Gizmo went to the Vet last Wednesday because he wasn’t eating, despite a lack of energy. They decided it was a combination of stress and some inflamed/overgrown back molars and prescribed him Metacam and Critical care 4x a day. Friday afternoon I finally saw an improvement in his eating/drinking though it still isn’t the best.
I believe it was on Saturday that I used a furminator on my other rabbit, an angora named Dahlia. I though I had got all of it up but I guess there must have been some on the floor because, while they are separated until they are fixed, I found this after Gizmo came out for a run today:
I am mortified because I haven’t seen him eat much today (though he did drink) and the vet is closed now. I can only imagine what is going on in his stomach and I’m very worried. ![]()
I hope you’re talking about the strung together poops because I have no idea what that is next to it! Hoping the thing next to the poop is a chew toy.
The poop is definitly strung together by ingested fur. This shows that the fur is being passed (that’s good that it’s coming out!). Lots of hay, lots of water, and brushing will help. Furminator is good. Hairbuster (Binky Bunny store sells them) is good too. In my experience, the furminator works on short fur (my dwarf rex/something mix) as well as longer fur (my Holland lops). The hairbuster works great on my lops (better than furminator) but I haven’t had as good luck with my short-haired bun (others have though).
I honestly don’t know what the other thing is either. I saw it and was really confused because it LOOKS like digested pumpkin around that mass of hair and I have no idea if that came out of Gizmo or not. I AM FREAKED OUT
Did the vet trim those teeth?
No, I have to call tomorrow to tell him about Gizmo’s progress since I didn’t get to talk to him today and he said we’d discuss it. I get the feeling that the teeth are not too bad as he emphasized last time that he thought it was mostly the stress of moving that made him not eat. I’m supposed to continue the force feeding and metacane until wednesday atleast though.
You might be surprised how bad the teeth could be and how little a rabbit shows that discomfort – would be good to get a good look under anesthesia and have that tooth trim done. Also there is the inflammation and that could require some antibiotics.
Thats why he’s got the metacam
(Edit: atleast I was told that was for the inflammation? Is that right??)
I’d like to go ahead and do the teeth trimming though. Any clue how much that costs?
I don’t think your bunny could have passed that other thing, but if he did, he’d have to feel better! I’m guessing it’s some kind of root or stick that had been chewed on and got shed fur stuck to it pretty good.
Try cutting the thing on half to see if you can tell what it is.
Its hair all the way through
The thing about it is it is very thick on either end and thinner in the middle….Like a string of pearls usually is..
Have I mentioned I’m horrified??
He doesn’t seem to be in any pain (running around and doing “hormonal things” like crazy haha) but I want to take things slow. This is super upsetting to me because he was supposed to get fixed Friday but I don’t want to take the chance of him getting worse ![]()
Metacam is for inflammation but if the mouth is inflamed due to an infection it is not going to help with the infection which is what is causing the inflammation.
No need to be horrified…if he has dental problems it’s possible he’s not eating his hay like he should which is could be an underlying cause for this.
Wow! If it were me, I’d show the thing to the vet. If he passed that then he passed one heckuva fur blockage! Also, the vet will be able to tell you if he’s OK to go ahead with the neuter and may be able to do a tooth filing at the same time.
I’m going to go ahead and leave a message for the Vet so I can be sure to get a call tomorrow.
Gotta get this boy better!
Edit: Yeah, Im keeping this hair…thing until I can show the vet.
Wow! I would definitely take that to the vet!
I have found the teeth trimming doesn’t cost too much as its not too invasive. My late bunny had her teeth trim, I think it cost around $80 but it varies depending on your vet. It probably shouldn’t go higher than $2-300 but with the neuter it may be more.
Keep us updated on what the vet says about the hair….thing.
If rabbits were capable of it I’d call Hairball, it looks like a mini version of what the cats sometines produce when moulting.
I talked to the Vet on the phone yesterday and he seems kind of hesitant to do a teeth trim. He keeps saying he wants to do bloodwork and x-rays if doubling the metacam dose (6ccs from once to twice a day) doesn’t work by Thursday-Friday.
Does anyone know the price range of bloodwork and x-rays?
(( I was approved for Care Credit but otherwise I really don’t make a great deal of money. I’ll do anything for my Rabbits but I don’t want to end up finding out that I got ripped off later on…))
Prices vary from place to place – it’s best to get the estimate from your vet – just call and ask.
Here is the way Care Credit works – if your bill is over a certain amount, you can put the amount on the promotional plan – I believe it’s $300 for 12 months – it is a sliding scale type thing – as long as you pay the minimum amount due each month before the promotional period, you will not be charged the finance charge – you can pay it off sooner of course – if you fail to pay it in full then that’s where the problem comes in of paying the full finance charge.
