My bunny had his operation to be fixed yesterday and all went well. He was a bit lethargic for the rest of the day, but today he is alert, eating, and drinking (returning to his normal self!). I am supposed to give him his dosage of metacam 2 times per day…however, he refuses to take it! When I attempt to give it to him, he jerks his head away. I tried holding him to do it as well, no luck. Any tips to get him to take it? I thought he would like it because it is supposedly honey flavored. Also, if he continues to refuse the medication, is it strictly for pain tolerance or is metacam actually necessary for healing….like an antibiotic or something? Can’t ask vet they are closed. Thank you for any advice/tips!

Metacam is for pain and inflammation. It’s not an antibiotic. It’s possible that your bunny might not even need the Metacam, although I would think he has some discomfort at least. Have you tried wrapping him in a towel or blanket (the burrito wrap) to keep him still? You may need a helper, someone to hold him as you give him the Metacam. Place the syringe to the side of his mouth, not the front, and you should be able to slide it in pretty easily and press the plunger. Metacam does have a sweet taste, so most bunnies will readily take it, but some rabbits are very resistant to having any syringes stuck in their mouth.

To be honest, if he is eating okay and acting normally then it could be more trouble than it’s worth. The small benefit of having the pain medication could be outweighed by the stress of actually getting him to take it. If it were me, I would just monitor him and if he doesn’t seem to be affected too much then simply forgo the meds. Sometimes boys just bounce back really quickly and then long lasting pain med they give at the vet’s office after the surgery is enough.

The first day, my bunny wouldn’t take his metacam or antibiotics. I had to shoot the meds in banana pieces. The second day, he would take the antibiotic but not metacam so used apples this time. By the third day, he took both no problem. Had to give both meds for two weeks because he caused himself to get infected by chewing out the stitches and constantly licking the boo boo.
