I spent Friday calling around to find out how much it will be to have Melody spayed. Our local SPCA is experienced with rabbit neuters, but doesn’t do spays. The quotes I was given ranged between $400 and $600!!! Way more than I was expecting, and enough to put a serious dent in my emergency fund.
Last night I had Melody on my lap on her back so I could trim her nails….. She’s a he! I’ve never been so excited by testicles in my entire life!!! A neuter is only $75!
Now, Melody Elizabeth needs a new name. In keeping with our recent Doctor Who naming tend, my 6 year old wants to name him Rory. I’m pushing for Ianto (our husky/pyr mix is Harkness).

            I’m with the 6-year-old, I like Rory!

We had a similar but opposite situation . . . my son had originally named our first bunny JackJack . . . which was changed to Kieko when we found out “he” was a “she”.

We had a similar situation with Pepper! My sister got her for us from a farm where the owner had a surprise litter of rabbits and told us she was a he. For about 6 months we called her a boy, and same thing, we were trimming “his” nails and I thought it odd to not see testicles, so I called Grand Animal Hospital where we would later have her spayed and they said we would have definitely noticed them by now! I went on youtube for checking the sex of a rabbit, and checked her again and sure enough he is a she! And if you’re staying with the Dr.Who theme naming, go old school Dr. Who and name him Mickey!

I’d stick with Melody, lol! I actually had ‘Henry’ picked out for my ‘bunny’, girl or boy? What sex he was wasn’t an issue till it came to having him neutered or spayed? and I spose it helped to know whether to call him a ‘naughty GIRL’ or ‘naughty BOY’, ha ha hah ha…..
Almost 20 years ago when my kids where around the same age as yours now, we had a ‘female’ toy poodle called Molly and when she sadly and tragically lost her life, the new man in my life (now my hubby, lol!) bought the kids a new but BOY toy poodle and the kids called him Molly again. When we got Sam our female dog – the council called me to ask if I registered there names incorrectly??? Ha ha haha!
We just name our pets – sex has never been an issue for us personally. But whatever you choose to do – go for it. Not that I ever thought of the name Melvin before, I have to admit, I do like it – good one LBJ! My vote is for ‘Melvin’ mossling.

PS – BONUS! on the neutering savings!!!! Cheers.

Join the club! It turns out that my Sienna is also a boy bunny, although I will be sticking with his name. You could just keep the name Melody or shorten it to Mel! .

So clever xBunnyKissesx! Yes, ‘Mel’ for short – Brilliant!
But again, if you want to change his name mossling – go for it!

I also love when the original name is kept despite the gender. It makes me smile.

But if his name is to be changed, I’m also siding with the 6 year old. lol

I was going to keep his name Melody, I liked it and was already calling him Mel, but then my husband suggested Pond. My daughter jumped up and down squealing and I was overruled!

My new rule is gender neutral names for all buns!

Yeah, Luna used to be a boy…. Haha!
The funny thing is my vet actually told us she was a boy too!
Oh well! Make sure you like the name you pick is my advice. I picked Luna in a bit of a rush because the vet wanted the name for her and I kinda wish I’d picked something else now!
