        Hello,

I apologize my first post will be a long  “Please Help Me” post… but I need advice. I’m Sorry

My wife and I have a House Bunny named “Puppy” he is a 5 1/2 year old lop.

(I know Puppy is a strange name for a bunny but my wife (girlfriend at the time) wanted a puppy and the apartments we lived in didn’t allow dogs, but they did allow rabbits so I got her a Bun Bun and named him Puppy)

Puppy has never had any issues like this before.

He was staying at my in-laws house when he first started to not eat or drink. They took him to the vet and they advised them to force feed (syringe) and administer an oral medication to “calm his stomach”…  but the vet they took him to is not proficient in house rabbits and he had them syringe feeding Puppy “Ensure”

They did this for about a week and he had completely stopped eating and stooling on his own. this was 3.5 weeks ago.

I work for H&R Block so after mid April I get a month vacation so for a horrible situation the timing couldn’t be better.

Then off work, I took Puppy to a rabbit specialist and they found a Huge Gas Bubble in his stomach and quickly diagnosed it as GI Stasis.

they prescribed Syringe feeding Oxbow Critical Care for food, Lactulose 3X per day , and the same “upset tummy medicine 3X per day, sorry I don’t have the name of it in front of me.   They also gave him 2 doses of Fluids at the Clinic.

They gave Puppy a 50/50 chance of survival my first visit.

I refuse to see my wife be sad so I made it my sole mission to make Puppy better. I did everything the vet prescribed, they needed to see Puppy almost every day to give him fluids through the needle. The Rabbit Specialist I took him to is very far away (1 hour each way) and I felt as if Puppy was being stressed by the constant visits and car rides. So I had them teach me how to administer the fluids and sent me home with everything I needed.

Puppy is obviously not happy with being force fed and all of the things we have to do to keep him alive… who would be…

My wife and Mother In Law tried to help me with feedings… but my wife is “too nice” and cant get much food into him because she thinks she is hurting him. And My mother in law (in my opinion) is “too rough” and tries to FORCE the medicine into his mouth and it spills out onto his (Dewlap?) chin rolls and Puppy reacts… how any of us would if that happened to us… My Mother in Law would get minimal to no Medicine and Food into him and get frustrated and says he “wont eat it”  (he will if you take it slow and be nice lol)…

this also created a pretty bad rash and fur loss under his chin that looks terribly uncomfortable. Poor Puppy

So I decided that I will take SOLE responsibility for feeding medicating and taking care of Puppy… I am somewhat patient (for a Man lol)

with the medicine, fluids, and Critical care it takes me a little over 1 hour for each “session” 3X per day to take care of him. that’s not including exercising him and giving him constant tummy rubs to calm his stomach. I’m working with Puppy basically all day every day.

Puppy started stooling after 2 weeks and then the stools returned to “somewhat normal” after a few days of abnormal ones.

I thought we were in the “home stretch…” all we need now is for him to start eating on his own and we are golden!!! But it has been another week and a half and still nothing. Force feeding him is becoming increasingly difficult every day and he still wont eat on his own.

All I can get him to eat is a bite or two of greens then he refuses any more.

I have been Offering him pellets, carrot tops, spinach, broccoli, timothy hay, romaine lettuce pretty much everything I can think of that’s “good for him”  he wont even eat “treats”

he seems to be stooling “normally” now and he has no problem eating that (I have read that its normal)

Basically I am asking if anyone else on here has gone through this and what can I do to make the little guy eat. He is acting perfectly normal, aside from not eating obviously.

Please tell me there is something else I can do.

I mentioned above that I am a patient man… but I don’t know what to do. it has been 3.5 weeks and every day I feel as if he will start eating again but still nothing. the stress is building and I am trying not to break….

I need to be the “Rock” for my wife but I am feeling more stressed every day…

Did the vet check his teeth? It very well could be teeth problems – there has to be some underlying issue for this.

You have my sympathies on the hard time you’ve all been going through, and my admiration for your determination and persistance in very trying circumstances! You have a very lucky rabbit and wife!!!

I’m sure you will get more helpful and detailed information from other members who have much more experience with difficult health issues but until they post I’ll pass along a couple of things I’ve learnt from reading their posts in the past.

You may have tried doing this but you did not mention it in your post, you might try mixing the critical care with something he likes and offering it to him. I’ve seen other members mix with carrot juice, apple juice and/or sauce or mashed pumpkin. If he could eat it on his own instead of force feeding that would be a little something.

My only other immediate thought is that if his stomach still appears to be bothering him you could offer him a heating pad or hot water bottle to lie on. It is important that it be placed so that he can lie on it or not as he chooses, but it can help stimulate the gas to pass through his system. The method I’ve used successfully in the past is to put a hot water bottle in a cardboard box, either just big enough to hold the bottle, or with some crumpled paper around it, and put the box in with the rabbit. The box keeps the bottle warmer longer, and provides a nice warm but not hot surface for the rabbit to lie on if he wishes.

Is he drinking on his own again, that wasn’t very clear. Leaving any greens you offer nice and wet will also help to hydrate him. That he is eating and again passing droppings definitely sounds like a good sign to me, however, you do want to solve the problem and that means finding the cause.

Best of luck!, and I’ll hope you post with good news soon!

I’m very sorry you’re dealing with this. It is VERY stressful.
              {{{Puppy}}} (I love the name).

I wonder if you should discuss with the vet about giving pain meds. And possibly Questran? (Questran help take out harmful toxins if there’s a gut imbalance). Likely there is if lots gas was being produced.
I know the thought of giving more things by syringe would not be appealing! Perhaps one of the other things can be reduced now that his gut is moving somewhat.
For any additional meds, the vet may agree to prescribe without Puppy being brought in again. It would be great if you could pick anything up from a closer clinic or pharmacy.

Were X-rays taken in the beginning or did first vet determine no blockage by feeling the tract?

what can I do to make the little guy eat. He is acting perfectly normal, aside from not eating obviously.

Are you still doing fluids? Maybe he feels full due to those??
Food wise, try offer greens that are not his usual favourites. I’ve found my buns would not be interested in the things they normally loved, but ate things that were on the bitter side. Try some dried things also. Dried willow, raspberry leaves…

More {{{vibes}}} for your little guy.

Sorry, to clear some things up… Puppys Gas Bubble is Practically gone, it dissipated when he started passing stool again! He is Stooling “normally”. And I have backed off the meds to 2X per day, Critical Care 3X per day (less amount) and Fluids Every other day. The vet had me do this to try and entice him to eat on his own.

@Sarita After my research online I also thought it could be his teeth. I had myself convinced… when I first took him to the vet I wanted them to check his molars but they did not want to sedate him because of his gas bubble but he was a Good Boy and they were able to check without sedation… they said his teeth look fine. No issues. I also had them check again on Tuesday when I took him in again for a checkup. Apparently nothing wrong. (Didn’t know how to feel…. is it bad I wanted the issue to be his teeth??? At least we would have had some answers!)

@Grey Dove mixing the critical care with something would be a great idea! I will try that today! He is not drinking on his own either. sometimes he will put his face in the dish but I don’t think he is drinking. The vet advised and I have backed off the fluids (every other day) and critical care (Just 3 tablespoons per day). To Try and make him a little more hungry…

@jerseygirl Xrays were taken, and no blockage was found. Fluids only every other day, on Tuesday vet said fluid levels looked great! Last night he wouldn’t eat fresh carrot tops out of the fridge but he ate a small one that I had offered him earlier…(dried out on the floor) that is a great callout for bitter things. I will have to see what I can find to offer him.

Thank You for the Kind Words! This is why I wanted to post on here because you understand the struggles and may have some great advice!

Update: Puppy is running around like a madman today. Still not eating or drinking but he is totally himself which makes my heart smile Now if only we can get that little guy to munch a carrot or two we will be in business!!

I Posted a reply to your questions but I’m not sure if I messed it up… I don’t see it haha. Maybe it got lost in cyber space. I will give it some time and if it doesn’t pop up I will repost it.

3.5 weeks is a very long time for a rabbit to go without eating – I’ve had a rabbit go a few weeks this way but never that long. I would say once you get him eating and back to normal it would be a very good idea to sedate him and have the vet do a very thorough dental by feeling his teeth because many times you cannot see problems with just the otoscope and the vet can look at those very very back teeth.

Okay, so on to trying to tempt him to eat – have you ever tried to tickle his nose with some fragrant herbs or greens to try to get him to eat – I sometimes do that with my rabbit – try breaking the cilantro or parsley so that the fragrance might tempt him.

So pleased about your good news, but definitely want to read that terrific post saying that he’s eating normally!

I thought I’d post this link since the page has a good list of vegetables, greens and fruits that are safe for a rabbit. I realize you have a good grasp on the topic already but I thought seeing a list might suggest something you hadn’t thought of trying. http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/

Also if he prefers dried food at the moment why not offer him some dried herbs such as parsley, thyme and sage?

Has he enjoyed other kinds of hay in the past? Maybe oat or meadow would appeal to him.

Not a lot of help I know but some times I find when I’ve been worrying about something a long time someone else’s suggestion may spark a thought or two simply because their ideas make me think along different lines.

Best of luck and do please keep us posted.

                          Hi there,
                          How’s Puppy doing?

Puppy is still not eating on his own. He has an appointment on Thursday to put him under anesthesia and get his teeth looked at and filed down… I am worried, but also hopeful that this is going to be the issue and we can solve this once and for all…

He is interested in food but wont even take a bite…

I’m praying for a good vet visit tomorrow

                            Thank you for your concern

                            fingers crossed!

Puppy’s being interested in food but not eating does sound to me like a pain related issue. We’ll be thinking of you all tomorrow and hoping for a solution to the mystery/problem! Please let us know how it goes and what happens.
