And I’m freaking out!!  I’ve done a lot of reading on spays, and I know I shouldn’t be so nervous, but I tend to be a worrier. Holly seems so small that the thought of her going through a surgery is terrifying. Was anyone else this nervous pre-spay? How did you cope? haha

Everyone around me is pretty much just rolling their eyes at my anxiety about this, but as Tuesday is quickly approaching I’m just freaking out more and more.

On a positive note though, Holly has been BAD lately. LOL I know that doesn’t sound positive, but the thought of her bad behaviors easing up after her spay helps me feel a little better. I’m looking forward to her fantastic litter habits returning.

Oh gosh Katie, I so get that your feeling anxious about Holly’s spay and I’m sure that’s to be expected. Me? NOPE! Henry was SOOOO naughty, spraying us and everything in reach of his pee flicks, I was actually excited! A CURE!!! The thought of enjoying Henry less his bad hormonal behaviour after he was neutered was something I could only dream about pre-neuter. Try and be positive (and I know that’s hard, sorry) and know that your doing this for her well being, and health, and I’m sure you too will enjoy her more not having to worry about her poor hormonal behaviour once she fully recovers. Take care Katie, and I’ll be thinking of you both on Wednesday (my time – lol!). Cheers Katie.

PS – To keep myself occupied while Henry was at the vet, I started to clean his pee off my walls, furniture, bedding, dog’s and the whole time I was scrubbing I was thinking how lovely it will be to live in a ‘clean’ environment with my bunny! And months later – I DO! Just marvellous.

Oh gosh, at cleaning the pee of the dog’s I had a good laugh, thanks! LOL (and sorry haha). Luckily she’s been no where near is bad as that, just a lot of stray poops everywhere! I’m really looking forward to hopefully having her free roam sometime after her spay, so that’s definitely something to look forward to.

Everyone here has been making me feel like I’m crazy for being so nervous. I bet a lot of people on here get that a lot from their families and friends, though. I’ll make sure to give you an update when she’s back home. I’m just hoping her recovery will be quick!!

Oh Katie yes we were all nervous.   I took taxi to the vets and stayed til bunny was ready to go home.  about 6 hours.  Then went home with taxi and my Ruby bunny.

I took a peek at the surgery a couple of times too.  Very interesting.

Nervous oh yes.   Ruby wasn’t spraying or anything.  She got spayed at 6 months.     I was thinking no stinky urine and no cancer she will live long healthy life. She did fine

I know the feeling! I have gone through three spays and I was a complete wreck each and every time!

Don’t worry though – the alternative is much worse (uterine cancer) so just know you are doing the absolute best for your bunny. That’s what is the most important. My Lacey is barely hitting three pounds (full-grown – she’s a year old). She went through her spay and came out just fine. She was bouncing and active a day later. Nora, one of my others, came out and I thought they forgot to spay her. She was a bundle of energy and I could not get her to sit still. Talk about an odd ball? My first girl, Sidney, was depressed for about two-three days but with lots of encouragement and love she snapped out of it and became coming around again.

Pain meds are important though! Make sure your vet gives you extra to bring home to help with any soreness or pain she may have – a bunny that is in pain is a lot more likely to stop eating and go into stasis so it’s a nice precaution to take to keep her comfortable!

You will both be fine – Good luck to both of you! I will keep you both in my thoughts though as I do know how stressful and terrible the feeling is!

Thank you for the encouragement! Tanlover, I hope Holly bounces back as quick as your Lacey!

Thanks for reminding me about the pain meds. I’ll make sure to get some extra on Tuesday.
It is comforting to know that this is definitely what’s best for her, and any nervousness I have now or discomfort she’ll feel is much better than the alternative she might experience if I don’t have her spayed.

Oh I’m so nervous for Frodo to be neutered as well!!!
                        They’re so small after all.
I’ll think about you and Holly!

I worried too, and cried like I’d never see them again when I left all three for their spays and neuter! All of mine did fine. The girls took a little longer to recover than my boy (as is expected). I think the pain meds helped keep them from being so active (vet had me give it longer to the girls). I had to keep the girls from running and jumping excessively for 7 days. All were groggy for a day or so.

Edit: (stupid phone!) I’m sure Holly will be fine. Don’t feel silly for worrying. That’s what mom’s do!

I was so nervous for Lulu’s spay too. I couldn’t leave the vet office because I was so afraid something would happen if I left. I was so scared, and reading the horror stories don’t help lol. When it’s all done she will probably be mad at you for awhile…until the first dose of pain meds. Lol Lulu loved medicine time and was very lovey dovey after that
Lots of love to you and Holly!!

JackRabbit, how did you stop your girls from running and jumping for 7 days?! lol I don’t have a clue, aside from keeping her confined to her cage, but even in there she still has room to run (though I am closing off her second level tonight). I can’t really imagine containing Holly. She’s sweet, but definitely strong willed and stubborn. haha

BunnyLady, Thank you! I was thinking of staying at the office as well. I hope she doesn’t hold a grudge against me! lol But yesterday I tried out the bunny biscuit recipe on the House Rabbit Society website and Holly LOVED them. She’s been such a sweetheart since, so maybe she’ll remember that. haha

I know how you feel. Lily weighs like two pounds and I was worried about her having surgery, but she came through okay, and Holly should too.

Frodo is @ the vet right now staying overnight so she can do his neuter tomorrow. Picking him up tomorrow evening after work. *worried*

Good luck, Ellekke for your bun as well!

Katie, don’t let her charm you into letting her have a chance to run early! Any tearing of stitches from running & jumping means back to the vets & a longer recovery period! I know how hard it is! Don’t let her have a 2nd level to jump onto and keep her caged for 3-4 days (typically is what they recommend). You’ll feel really bad especially when she stares you down to let her out BUT you’ll feel worse if something happens! BE STRONG!

Ellekke, I’ll be thinking of Frodo tomorrow as well! Let us know how he’s feeling tomorrow evening.

tanlover14, just got done blocking off her second level and she’s currently enjoying some supervised free roaming before her big day. I also just did a full deep cleaning of her cage and all her things at this random time at night. haha She also has 3 types of hay in with her right now, and some new goodies from the BB store coming in the next couple days. I have a feeling after her spay she’s going to be even more spoiled than she is now from me feeling so sorry to her. LOL

We went shopping while we waited for my buns spay to be done, the two were done at the same time – my Fleury and Sidney – and were both brother and sister so I was REALLLLLLY nervous having two done (and my first ones at that!). So we dropped them off at 8:30AM and went to breakfast while they did them until we got the call. Of course, I felt so terrible my boyfriend & I bought them a million new treats & things to play with! You’re not the only one!

                                          Hi Katie, Hi everyone,

Frodo is doing very well! He’s been eating and drinking and hopping around. I put him in a smaller cage so he doesn’t move around too much (just to be sure). But as far as I can tell he’s just himself! He even jumped on my sofa!! I was like: “Noooo Frodo you can’t do that you need to rest!!!”. But he was like all cute face and he seemed to be thinking:”Meh…no biggie…”. That silly bunwun…

Arya will be next in about two months. So I’m hoping to hear from Holly and how well she is doing.

Good luck tomorrow!!!! I’m keeping all my thumbs and big toes up!!!

Ellekke, I’m so glad to hear how well Frodo is doing!! I did the same thing and gave Holly a smaller area, too. It’s always better to be safe.

I just picked up Holly and she’s doing great! The vet said the surgery went really well and she ate there also. She actually seems pretty normal! haha I let her out of her crate into her cage and she went straight for her pellets and then her hay.

Just wanted to double check on a couple meds I received. They gave me 4 days worth of Metacam for the pain and a weeks worth of Baytril. Do you normally give an antibiotic after a spay (and now I have to figure out how to get these meds into her…lol)?

Anyway, Im SOOOO happy that she seems so well, and I’m SOOO happy to hear Frodo is just as good!

I wanted to send Holly get well cuddles and hug’s – but seeing Holly is doing so well, just smother her in kisses for me! (especially that cute little butt of her’s!) LOL! I’m so happy for you Katie. Cheers.

Edit to ADD – Please tell me her EAR’s are still perfect? They weren’t taped down or touched throughout the procedure….

Glad to hear both bunnies are doing good.  Eating  pellets already wow.

It took ruby a few days to eat all her pellets.  She ran when I let her out and made herself hurt is what took her back on eating.  I had to just keep her in her cage or hold her to give her attention. I couldn’t let her have roam time for a couple of days.  Oh that Ruby

Andy, her ears weren’t touched! LOL Still adorable. Now if only I could get her to take her meds. She’s a “freak out if I’m lifted even an inch off the ground” type bun, so I’m having problems giving her meds and checking her stitches. I’ve tried pretty much all the tips on here, except bringing her to an area she’s not used to, which I will try next.

bunnytowne, I’m afraid Holly is going to hurt herself, too! So far it doesn’t seem like she has, but even though I have her confined to half a cage (just the bottom level) she’s still managing to run and jump. I’m grateful she seems to be fairly normal, but I wish she would just rest! She’s also pulling at her stitches every once and a while, but I took off from work this week and plan on staying with her/ watching her for the next few days.

Check her incision area for sure – I actually used a piece of their favorite treat and held it up in the air so they would lift their front paws off the ground and then flashed a flashlight under them to check. It’s worked great for my buns. Nora also chewed her stitches and then began eating her skin. It was disgusting. And the vet said she was on the verge of possible infection so we had done the right thing by bringing her in. Just another reason to caution to make sure you check!

Can you mix her meds with pumpkin? That’s what I typically do so I don’t have a huge fight on my hands.

Hmmm, none of mine have ever had an antibiotic after their spays/neuters. I am very cautious about using antibiotics as there are only limited ones for bunnies & the more you use them, the more likely they will become immune to them and they will stop working. I mean one time isn’t going to do that to your rabbit – just my personal preference on being extra cautious with using them!

I’ve been doing the treat in the air thing, it works great!! So far it still looks normal.
I had tried mixing her meds into some banana mush and she ate about half before I think she realized the trick. The next day I tried it again and she ran off thumping. haha She’s too smart for me. I think we’re ok without the meds though. By this point she would have been finished her pain meds (and she never actually acted like she was in pain– eating right away, drinking and pooping normally) and it doesn’t seem like giving antibiotics is that common anyway (and her vet said it was fine to stop trying).
