I brought Zeus to the new vet on Monday – he needed a sanitary shave, and my normal vet couldn’t fit him in anywhere. So I tried the local vet. They’re 5 minutes from my house, versus my old vet which was 45+ minutes from home.
The vet was very nice and just very quiet and gentle with handling Zeus. He seemed pretty comfortable with a bunny, and even did this cool trick when he was trimming his nails. Zeus hates to be picked up, so for his back feet, he just kind of stretched the foot out behind him (like when a bunny is stretched out in the “superman” pose). With his foot like that, Zeus still felt like he was close to the ground and secure, and the vet had access to his nails. Very cool.
The shave went well, and just like with the nails, he was able to kind of just manipulate Zeus’s bottom so he could so the shave with his paws still on the exam table. In general Zeus seemed less stressed, the vet was very handy at figuring out ways to do things the way Zeus didn’t mind it.
He didn’t really seem concerned about Zeus’s dirty bottom, and just suggested trying a monthly butt bath in a dishpan with just some warm water. He also suggested fresh pineapple juice, 2 or 3 ccs, once monthly.
All in all, it was a good visit. His office isn’t anywhere near as fancy as my old vet’s, and he doesn’t have any vet techs on staff who can do exotics, so it was me and my boyfriend doing all the holding. But it was admittedly nice working with the vet one on one versus the vet tech. He’s definitely very “old school”, he’s been practicing over 20 years. He was very impressed I found a vet to do both of my bunnies’ de-sexing surgeries, LOL. So I guess he doesn’t do operative work on bunnies, so if that need were ever to arise (not to jinx myself!), I’d probably have to go back to the old vet.
Bonus points, it was a few dollars cheaper than my old vet.
