Unneutered bunny smell can be strong (mainly the pee), that’s for sure. I tried a few different litters and settled on Carefresh Natural (they also make one with baking soda in it — it’s fine but the Natural and the Ultra work fine for us). I could be wrong, but I always thought pine shavings were absorbent but not necessarily for oder control? We dump the litter boxes every day (could probably get by with scooping our the used parts) and clean them with a mix of white vinegar and water (um, probably not often enough so I won’t say just how long we go!). No smell problems at all there.
I don’t think regular poops are supposed to smell very bad (?). Once in a while Moshi will leave a cecotrope on the floor and those *really* stink! Luckily that’s rare.
The other smell issue we have is a scent gland thing — if anyone goes into the buns’ room without announcing themselves, Moshi will startle and open his scent glands. Skunk smell for about 5 minutes! I’ve even had my female buns do this too.
Oh, the stray poops? Get used to it! No matter how litterbox trained your bunny is, you will always find an occasional little present!
