I was able to forage some fresh willow branches a couple of weeks ago for Ellis, and I twisted them into rings for him. He went absolutely nuts for them and it was one of the best treats he’s ever had.
Then my daughter and I realized that willow is a natural source of salicylic acid, aka aspirin, and we got worried about giving him too much and causing anti-coagulant problems. He has no health problems, so we’re probably just being paranoid, but he’d eat willow every day if we gave it to him. Would this be safe? Should we discontinue the willow for a few days/weeks before we trim his nails, e.g. in case we clip the quick?
FWIW, he weights about 4.5lbs and the rings are made of fresh, untreated willow branches, 2-3 feet long. (Willow is starting to bud here for the spring, so it’s easy to forage a fresh supply.) I know weight is significant how much food and medication should be given, but is it relevant for willow?
thx

PS – We also have pussy willow available. Is that safe?
