I’ve been wanting to get a companion for my Nessie for a while but I was not sure when the right time was. I knew I’d have to get her spayed first so I did that last November. My roommate and I are possibly moving this summer so at first I was going to wait until after the move but our plans are not really solid so what was originally going to be May could end up being much later. The other night Nessie gave me a scare (probably had gas) and while she was feeling unwell I felt that I should not wait on getting her a bunny friend who could be with her in her times of need and keep her company when I am at work.
I looked around and found a bunny on craigslist that I have absolutely fallen in love with and I’m going to see him on Sunday. He is a male and I have read that male/female couples are often easier so that’s good. The new bun is not yet neutered though. My Nessie is spayed so there is no danger of accidental pregnancy, however I have read that both rabbits should be fixed for optimal bonding. I do not know how soon I will be able to get him neutered (I don’t want to make an appointment before I have a bunny!) so I was wondering if I should try bonding before he is neutered or keep them separate until he is neutered. I have read that if rabbits ARE bonded, you should take them both on the ride to the vet and put them together to ease the stress of recovery.
Should I try to bond them first or should I keep them away from each other until new-bun is fixed (and recovered of course)?
I figure I will probably try and see what they do with each other to kind of test the waters but if it doesn’t go well I may hold off on more serious sessions until he’s fixed unless someone advises otherwise.
I’ve got no experience bonding rabbits, Nessie is my first house rabbit though I had many outside bunnies in my childhood.
