Licorice (bunny we found) is displaying what I would describe as very “excited” behavior towards Chipper. I noted he gets erect, and I swear – I am wondering if he is truly neutered or if the vet made an error.
Did the vet neuter him or just say he appeared to be neutered?
The Vet said he was neutered. He took him in the back specifically to check. Said his behavior coincided with that as well. I only am wondering because well – he’s hump happy – and today I realized (when trying to calm him down) that he was erect! Yikes! So I looked, and I could see where I am assuming testicles are. He also smells kind of strange. Almost like onion? That sounds weird… I know.
I’d have the vet check again, his testicles may simply have descended late for him or, only one was dropped when he was neutered and, the vet that did it assumed he only had one (not an uncommon defect). He may be intact or half neutered.
That said, some bucks do act like intact bucks even after being neutered, especially if it was done when they were older, after the male hormones fully engaged. In horses we call that a proud but gelding and, they still act like stallions for the most part. It’s the same for rabbits, if he was neutered later, he got the hormones, and the mentality to be a buck engaged and, will act like one, even though he can’t produce offspring.
Bluemoods that makes sense on all levels. I will speak with the Vet when I take Chipper in on the 17th and see what he thinks about Licorice then. Our vet is an awesome guy!
This doesn’t sound weird at all! That does sound like he isn’t neutered! The musky, onion smell is common in unneutered males.
I cannot thank you all enough. I suspect Licorice is not actually neutered. He is starting to STINK. Yuck! I am taking him with me to Chipper’s well check on the 17th. The vet’s office staff were wonderful They said since we found him – he may just be much younger than we all thought.
In the meantime – I think we will not be pursing bonding until we know.
That would explain his “insanity” when you were trying to introduce them. Even neutered males (and females) will be hump-happy in an effort to show their dominance. But it sounds like he was even more excited than that.
OH MY! I decided to flip him over to take a look – um, NOT neutered! LOL I am about 99.9% sure those testicles were completely descended. He must be much younger then we realized and just be hitting maturity.
Sounds like someone needs to be neutered! Haha! I think that will solve a lot of the problem. In the meantime, you can work on getting Chipper accustomed to everyone in your household. That way he will (hopefully) feel less timid when you are able to resume bonding efforts.
Love my life. Bunny we found – up to like $800 between set-up and care. LOL Yay for free bunnies!!! Seriously – I wouldn’t trade him for anything. I feel terrible – I’ve been having to keep him in his cage because he is somehow scent marking my floor. Yuck! Poor bunny. I need to get him snipped ASAP. The 17th can’t come fast enough!
LOL, yeah it sounds like you have a young buck that now needs neutered, or kept away from females and you doing a lot of extra cleaning to minimize the smell he will leave all over his territory.
Katscarpena… Yup. No free pets… Lol!
He’s very fortunate to have you. 🙂
So, Licorice is the first bunny you had, you found him? And then you got Chipper? Is Chipper neutered already?
LOL, definitely no such thing as a free pet!
While you’re waiting to get him neutered get your paws on some white vinegar. That stuff is a life safer when he comes to cleaning up rabbit urine. And once the vinegar smell has faded you’ll notice that the pee smell will be gone as well.
On a side note, is that Licorice in your profile pic? He looks just like a younger version of my bun boy. ![]()
Licorice is in my profile pic and he is the 1st bunny we had. We found him in early December, and caught him in the live trap Dec 23rd. Merry Christmas! Funny thing is – I thought he was a baby/juvenile. Vet said – not likely, he’s just a dwarf variety. Now I’m sure he is – which makes me happy. It means he probably wasn’t out there too long!
Chipper we got second – going on 4 weeks as of this week. He is from the SPCA, and definitely neutered.
They are both so cute/funny! I hope Licorice doesn’t change too much after his neuter. He has great personality.
I don’t think it will change his personality. Behaviors that are not necessarily part of his personality, but hormonal, will disappear (or at the very least lessen). So I suppose it depends on what you view as being part of his personality.
I am hoping the neutering makes him less “frantic” to get at Chipper, less stinky, and less poopy. LOL Now he is suddenly scattering droppings at the barrier between him and Chipper’s free areas and around his cage. Ugh!
Otherwise I was just hoping he’d keep his playful nature. I know many male cats after neutering get lazy and gain weight (ours sure did!) Hoping it’s not the same for bunnies.
Mine aren’t very lazy. I mean, they lay around during the day like all bunnies do. But in the evening they will get pretty hyper (and naughty). They will run around and play or explore. I really think neutering Licorice will cut down on his excitement to get to Chipper. He’ll definitely be less stinky. Pooping will probably lessen, but keep in mind that poop wars may be part of the bonding process.
Oh wow! What a surprise that must have been! Thank goodness you are getting him fixed soon. For your sake, haha and sanity, I hope the 17th hurries up and gets here quick! I’d go crazy having to wait.
Not seeing the testicles earlier doesn’t necessarily mean he is young and they hadn’t descended. Porky is not neutered, and at home where he’s relaxed and comfortable he lets them hang down, but at the vet he pulls them up inside and hides them completely.
Licorice is not neutered! And Eepster – he let it all hang out at the vet’s today. LOL He grew a little too actually. So the Vet said he “retracts” his 1st guess at 2 years of age, and said it’s more likely he’s between 6-8 months of age. He also said it was the 1st time he’s ever been wrong – so he didn’t charge us for either rabbit’s visit!
His neuter is scheduled for next Wed at 7am. They said he can eat and rink before, and to bring food for him for right after.
Sounds good! Let us know how things go!
