Hey everyone, new to the forum. My beloved rabbit of more than four years, Mr. Peaches, has gotten a case of head tilt due to an ear infection. Last week, I noticed that his head was tilting to the left, his eyes were moving up and down, and he wasn’t eating, so I took him to see the vet. After finding that Mr. Peaches had a middle ear infection, he prescribed Enrofloxacin (Baytril) and Meclizine as his treatment, to be given orally every 12 hours for 14 days. He also gave me Critical Care to feed him with through a syringe.

It has been 7 days and Mr. Peaches is showing confusing signs of improvement. His head is still tilted about 45 degrees, I still have to feed him Critical Care, and it seems like his loss of balance has gotten a bit worse. Before I was able to pick him up and move him around no problem, but now he flips on his back and turns over whenever I pick him up. His rapid eye movement, however, is better and his eyes are back to normal.

He still licks himself and runs around, but he continues to tilt his head. Is the Baytril treatment working? Should I take him back to my vet for another examination?

Thanks for all the help, Mr. Peaches and I really appreciate it!

It would be a good idea to get a recheck for this – I’m kind of surprised your vet didn’t recommend one in 2 weeks. The baytril may be working but he may need to be on it for a longer time than the 2 weeks. In any event, good to get that recheck to see if the vet see’s any improvement and see if you need to change or increase the current medications.

Welcome to BB… I wish it was under better circumstances though. I’m sorry to hear your boy isn’t doing well… 🙁

Tilt can seem to get worse before it gets better. I agree that a call to your vet is a good idea. Continue with the meds and ask when the vet wants you to come back in.

Yes, a vet check up is in order. The vet can tell you if he is improving and, he does need longer on Baytril. Vets prescribe antibiotics for a set length of time for a reason so make sure he gets every dose for as long as he is supposed to have it, even if he does seem to be better.

With head tilt you do need frequent vet visits. Unfortunately with head tilt, it seems to get worse before it gets better. I know it’s not the best circumstances but maybe your vet could try an injection of some sort of steroid. When my bunny Toby had head tilt (we think it was caused by cancer though) he got steroid injections to make him more comfortable and they did make his head tilt better. Just something to talk about. You should also get him on a probiotic such as benebac
