  Sunny’s favorite hay started out as being mature oat hay. When the quality of it declined, his favorite became Oxbow organic meadow hay, and now it seems as though the quality of it has declined as well. Has anyone else noticed this? I have wasted soooo many bags I can’t even count. he won’t eat it, and I myself can tell a difference in the way it looks and feels, so I don’t think he’s just being picky. He’s “surviving” on APD timothy gold for now, and he has a collection of orchard, botanical, oat and timothy hays from oxbow, and one from Kaytee. He doesn’t seem to like any of them. He will eat the APD timothy gold but I think just because it’s best out of his choices. His room has been a complete mess since the trouble with the meadow hay started, as he picks through and tosses pieces out. I’ve also bought the meadow hay from three different sources and none have been satisfactory. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

  Since hay is a natural product, it can vary a lot from batch to batch. Hay is often grown 2-3 times through the season, and each “cutting” is a bit different than the others. Then year to year you’ll get big variations depending on weather. For a really picky bun I don’t know if there’s much you can do other than buy different kinds and see what he likes.

  Thanks for the information. I can probably then buy one bag every now and then until it seems better before buying a lot. (I usually buy 6 bags at a time). He’ll have to be ok with the Timothy Gold for now.lol But really, thanks for explaining that.

  The alternative is, if you can find horse quality grass hay he likes in big bales then, buy enough of that cutting, off that field for a year at once. You need storage for it but, then you could get the same hay the next year form that cutting again and, bales are cheaper than bags of hay.
