My fuzzy lop, Gracie, who is celebrating her week straight with no poopy butt now has another problem. I came home yesterday and found blood, but she was clean and I couldn’t figure out what it was from, until I cleaned things up and she released a bladderful of BRIGHT  RED BLOOD. (There’s no emoticon for this one!!)I’m not talking blood in the urine. I’m talking, from the looks of it, like someone cut off a body part and drained it in that one place. I was horrified!!!!!!!!!

I made a panicked call to the vet and to my hubby who immediately offered to leave work (love that guy!)

I brought the blood-soaked paper with me because I didn’t think they would believe how much blood it was. Could NEVER tell that was urine! And she was just as happy and bouncy and hungry as always!

The vet took an x-ray (not the usual one that sees my buns) and didn’t see stones, so Gracie went home w/ an antibiotic ($46 just for the pre-measured bottle…I’m saving the mountains of leftovers I’ll have) and an anti-inflammatory and the vet said he felt she was awfully young for a tumor so it’s probably a UTI, possibly from all the poopy butt she had, We’ll know better in the next 1-3 days, depending on whether she responds to the meds.

Any input? I have been trying to get hold of the vet hosp to see if the other vet is back, but have had trouble getting through

By the way, she still isn’t spayed, and she’s 2 1/2 years old. Scares me, but she’s been too sickly to spay since I got her in Oct.

Blood for a UTI doesn’t sound normal to me. I would definitely want to speak to your normal vet concerning this too.

Hopefully all it is a UTI though.

What type of antibiotic? If it’s compounded it won’t be good after a certain date. If not it may still be okay – I would ask the vet though just to be sure if you don’t end up using it all and saving it. You would only want to use it then anyway as directed by a vet.

            Poor Gracie =(
If the vet says UTI, let’s believe that and nothing worse for now. But it does sound alarming. Did the vet confirm it was blood, not blood-coloured bunny-urine? To have lost that much blood one would think she’d be rather lethargic.

            (((((((Gracie)))))))

You’ve done so much for her. I so hope she gets through this too.

Thanks everyone. I’m thinking the same thing about the amount of blood being so alarming. Glad you agree, cuz I thought I was being a panicked owner.
.Today there was bloody urine in her hay box (which she’s turning into a litter box, though she isn’t litter trained fully.)Seemed less bloody.
ANYWAY,,, Now that I got through to the vet, I can’t get through to the receptionist I largely trust to help. Ugh!

I’ll let you know about the anitibiotic. I’m at work and can’t remember, though Orbax rings a bell?? I suppose it would be considered compounded because I have to shake it? Well, I’ll see about that. Thanks for all the support. I’m so glad to have famliar people to run it past.

With antibiotics, I found this. http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml

Sadly, it states liquid antibiotics shouldn’t be used after expiration-date.

Ok Here it is. Orbax liquid and meloxicam for the inflammation. Gracie had to big wet spots today and it looks normal. Amazing! I called the vet, and it turns out the owner saw the bloody mess I’d brought in (guess they saved it for her?) and she saw it first thing, reviewed the xrays and everything with the vet and is content w/ what he did. That made me feel so good that she got on it so fast. She’s not the one I usually see, but is definitely a brilliant vet I turn to if I want another opinion. She’s getting older and cutting back on hours and I forced myself to work w/ another vet to get used to her.

I hope I don’t need the meds again, but I PROMISE I will ask in the event we need more. I have quite a ways to go, of course, on the antibiotics, so we’ll hope it remains that way.

Thanks you guys for being there!!! Your advice is huge to me!

That’s great – yes, I’ve given orbax before – I think I just gave it once a day if I remember correctly which I really liked.

So happy for Gracie and YOU! What a relief this must be, bet you didn’t sleep last night. Still keeping Gracie in my thoughts for her full recovery. Bunny cuddles to you both MB.

Good morning! (it is in OZ, lol!). How is Gracie today?

Well, I was just wondering if I should burden you with more info, but since AndHenry asked…
She’s WORSE again. She was good this morning. Now(after work) she won’t eat anything, isn’t pooping and peed bloody urine again. Not quite as bad as before, but a normal spot w/ lots of blood in it, then a foot-long bloody trail leading to another smaller spot of bloody urine. Waiting for a call back from the vet now. But I’m sure you’re probably sleeping in Oz

That blood just does not sound right. I really think I would take her in again for the regular vet to look at her.

Oh no! I was so hoping/counting on another good news update! This is terrible! PLEASE keep us updated! Take care MB. (poor Gracie!).

PS – No, it’s 7.20am here in OZ. Just having my cuppa tea at the computer very quietly while hubby is still asleep (worked nightshift this week).
And when I hear him wake up, I’ll quickly close the computer so he doesn’t know I’ve been on this morning – for some reason he thinks I have a BB problem?

Ha ha ha ha I was typing out something this morning and my husband said, “Leave them alone!” Yeah, I get it. You’ve gained on me tremendously, though, AH. Probably because you’re nice and visit more forums than I. Don’t know how you keep everyone straight!
I thought you were 12 hours ahead, but I’ll have to add 13, until the clocks change.

Thanks, Sarita. I was alarmed that the blood had returned. I think it’s just the other vet again today, but the regular one returns tomorrow. Darn these young moms! How dare they be away from work so many days?? Hubby is already asking if he should meet me at the vet again 🙂 Pretty nice after the quick $154 we went through Monday.. I reminded him he loves her too and he does, pretty much.

Gee MB….. let us know what you decide to do today? But I totally get that you wanna wait to see your regular vet. After speaking to the vet clinic, they should be able to tell you whether Gracie needs to be seen today or whether she can wait till tomorrow? I feel just terrible for you MB – I can imagine how worried you are. (very sad face).

Well, thanks. While I was waiting for the vet to call, she started eating, so we’re going to go w/ the anitibiotics overnight. She’s not eating lots and mostly a little of this, then stops, then a little of that and stops and won’t go back. Broke down and offered carrot, which isn’t good for her tummy, but she thought she was in carrot heaven!
If she doesn’t look good overnight, I’ll just take her to the vet before work and call them from, like, their parking lot and ask if I can drop her off for the day. It’s just not good. 🙁 Thanks for all the concern guys!!
