4 month old jingle bells (jb) has one rear leg which doesnt seem to be lifting as high when she’s hopping around. She doent seem to be in any pain and I can touch it and move it without distressing her.  Only noticed this Yesterday.  Any ideas?

Hi, I’m sorry your bun is worrying you. Some questions:
          1) how long has this been going on/is it fairly consistent?
          2) does it seem to be impeding the movement of your bun? Can it hop/binky/sprint okay still?
          3) when was the last time the nails were trimmed?
          4) does the bun live on a wire floor cage?

          Some things to look for:
          -a broken toe nail
          -sore hocks
if you can get her to be held for a while take the time to press each of her toes and see if she reacts negatively

After checking this and you still can’t seem to find anything wrong and she really isn’t being bothered by her foot I’d probably just let her be for a couple more days and see if it worsens or betters. Depending on the severity of the limp you can then probably make a judgement call and either decide that she simply favors one foot over the other, or you can make an appointment with a vet. The favoring of one foot is not necessarily something that should be a cause for alarm though, I’ve never seen a bunny do it, but I can think of a good number of dogs and cats and even birds that do it.

Oh thank you for your reply….I only noticed it yesterday and I trimmed nails today for first time..yikes! I just worry being a first time bunny owner..I have them inside with wood shavings and let them hop around room for play..they have started to climb up on anything they can. Ive held her in a baby cuddle pose and felt her leg and paw and she doesnt seem to really mind too much…anyhow ill keep an eye on it..

              You’re welcome ^_^

Yeah honestly I would just keep an eye on it, maybe she bumped it on something and it hurts a little but if she doesn’t seem to bothered by it I’m sure it is or will be fine!

                  Welcome to BB!

                  Slowebot gave you great info!

I’m wondering if this is an old injury (one sustained as a newborn baby) that went unnoticed and healed funny…

I agree to keep an eye on it. If it doesn’t seem to resolve, or gets more noticeable, follow up with your vet.

Regarding the litter you’re using: pine and cedar wood shavings are not safe for rabbits. They can lead to liver damage after prolonged use. ASPEN shavings are safe. Also, pine wood PELLETS, recycled paper pellets, carefresh. Check to see what else you have available in your area. 🙂

Do you know exactly what type of wood the shavings are? Are they cedar or pine?

Hi Miffy1970, Here in Oz it’s probably pine… Not a fan of wood shavings myself…
What state are you in… We have a few members peppered about the country and might be able to give you some places for supplies that might be cheaper of have a better variety..

If you are using a paper litter, you can probably do away with the shavings. Do you have that on the habitat flooring?
They’ll have better litter habits without bedding on the floor. Just litter & hay in a litterbox is all that is necessary.

If the buns are climbing etc i suppose she could have strained her back leg a little. They do kick out with the back legs pretty hard when being handled too. I always put hand below the butt to support the back and secure their back feet against my body. Saves them and me from becoming a jumble or arms and legs.

I would try keeping it bare a go. Even fit a piece of vinyl on the base or something wipeable. It will make clean up much easier for you.

When they have other surfaces that are absorbant they tend to pee in those as well as on the litter.
