› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Neutering TOMORROW!
I am so nervous because Prince is getting neutered tomorrow and I have to leave him there overnight! I have looked up questions to ask the vet tomorrow prior to the surgery. Is there any other tips that anyone can offer for a first time neutering experience? Any tips for post-surgery? Any tips to calm my nerves in general? lol
Thanks so much!
Is it a 24 hour clinic? Make sure someone will be available to observe him overnight. If not, I would request to bring him home before they close.
Make sure his cage/pen is clean with a fresh litter box. Get some of his favorite veggies to give him after (herbs like parsley or cilantro are good bc they’re very fragrant).
Before you leave the vets office, ask about pain meds that you can take home for him. Also, if they’re not 24 hours, ask who you should call if an emergency occurs overnight or over the weekend.
Hey Sealyah! My Henry had a sleepover when he was neutered cause hubby was working afternoon/night shift so couldn’t collect him that same day. I personally found it comforting (trusting my vet and his clinic/surgery helped) and I didn’t worry about him once (bad mother!) cause I knew he was in good hands. They called me when he came out of surgery, and the next morning he had fresh food in his cage (I’m sure it was someone’s lunch cause they don’t normally have bunnies – so I thought that was SUPER cool!). The vet also said to keep him in a clean environment (eeek! my dirty floors?!?! ha ha ha), but I (not other BBer’s) didn’t lock him in his house. I just let him do whatever he felt up too (being free range, I worried locking him up would stress him). He was fine. I (again, every bun is different) didn’t have to use pain meds. All was good. (Oh, just remembered – his sleepover meant he got pain meds again the next morning before we left – even better!).
Um…. calm your nerves????? I think that depends on how naughty your Prince is? My Henry was sooo naughty (lol) I wasn’t nervous – I was relieved! ha ha ha…. Looked forward to picking up my pee free bunny! LOL! He wee’d on my bed once since but has never SPRAYED us again! Best $ I ever spent!
Stay positive Sealyah and I’m sure it will all be fine. I’ll be thinking of you and Prince tomorrow. Take care. Henry’s mum.
AndHenry thank you so much for your thoughts for tomorrow! Prince really isn’t a bad bun, so that is why I am so nervous! The only things he has done is pee in a corner of the dining room once and poop a lot in the dining room and My BED!! Plus his pee has a strong musky odor. That will go away after neutering right? I have started to try and litter train him so that he only pee’s in a certain area. He also has begun to circle my feet, but thankfully NO HUMPING! LOL
I will ask about taking him home, and if the place is quiet (that is a good question to ask)! I am pretty sure it is not 24 hours, but I will ask the questions tomorrow.
Thanks again!!
Oh my Sealyah, your Prince is a prince! My Henry literally SPRAYED US! and the walls, furniture, bedding, lets not forget the dog’s (I could go on but I don’t want to bore you…. Lol!) And yes – this was on our bed too! (I’m embarrassed to admit I slept in bunny wee/poop) why I HAD to get him neutered. I tried shutting him out of the room but felt guilty we were all in bed and Henry was out on his own – couldn’t do it. Getting him neutered was my solution – and it worked! YAY!
Every bun is different, so I can only tell you about my Henry. When he came home the next day, we just carried on as usual – didn’t keep the noise down, etc., we just got on with it and it was Henry’s choice whether to stay in his house (in the kitchen/dining room) or wonder. We felt if we were normal, he would feel more comfortable/not stressed. His wee smell? I always worry about that. When the daughter visits the first thing I say (even before hello) is – can you smell anything? I worry that we have gotten used to his smell, LOL! So I think his smell is all ok (or the daughter is lying to me? never!).
My vet (lucky me) was so good he jumped in and told us! Never got a chance to ask a question, ha ha ha….. How cool! You’ll both be fine Sealyah. Bunny cuddles to Prince!
PS – I loved it when Henry circled my feet! He is such an ignorant bun, I took whatever pee free love I could get! Cheers!
Oh yeah… The unneutered male smell is really bad for some buns. It’s kind of a musky, “oniony” smell that just permeates the house. I have had an unneutered male who did not smell (although this was when I was younger and he was never “confirmed to be male). I have friends who did have confirmed males (testicles and all!) and the second you walk in the house, you can smell it.
This does go away very soon after neutering.
Just want to wish your bunny an ((((easy procedure and speedy recovery)))))
Does Prince have a bonded partner? sometimes taking the partner and letting them stay together after the surgery can be calming.
You will be fine
I remember being terrified of sending mine in when it was her time, didn’t want to let go at the vet counter. They had to pry her away from me lol. Hope she recovers quickly too!
It’s almost 6pm where I live… Have you heard back yet? How did everything go?
I couldn’t wait to get my guy neutered because of his smell! took about two weeks but he smells a lot less now. I hope yours does well with the surgery!!
I went to Sealyah’s profile bc she hasn’t posted back about how the surgery went… I was getting concerned and wanted to send a message directly.
I noticed that she has updated her profile with this:
Prince made it through surgery great! When I brought him home he bounded out of the carrier like everything was perfectly fine! He is drinking and eating great already! I’m so happy and now I can’t wait to litter train him!!

I’m so happy to hear everything went well! 🙂
So am I!!!!! I have been keeping an eye out for an update too. Thanks Beka.
