hey guys so Im bringing my bunny home on the 2nd and I just noticed that my cats & dog have fleas! Im off to petco to buy advantage and carpet spray!! that should help the dog and cats (advantage) and the spray should help with the carpet, Im also washing all the clothes and bedding in the bedroom. The breeder Im getting her from cant hold her any longer than the 2nd as shes leaving the state for a month after that. So my question is, is there any flea drops, shampoo or anything similar to advantage I can put on my bunny to help her untill they are all gone? She will be 11 weeks when I bring her home. I know fleas arent a giant health concern but i just dont want her being itchy all the time and Id like to be prepared! EW fleas

You can go to the vet (hopefully you have one located for the bun) and get Revolution. It’s one of the few that is safe for rabbits.

Is there anything I can buy at petco or petsmart? I really dont want to pay vet prices and theres no vet near me to make the trip too. I also need to get it asap, so I prefer petco or something! I dont have the bunny yet but I want to be prepared in case I cant get rid of these fleas. If I can then ta da! and hopefully I wont need it and thats also why Id rather not find a vet and pay there in case I end up not needing it. Thanks for your suggestion!!!

I have never dealt with this issue, but here is what I have gathered from other posts:

Advantage is safe. It must be Advantage not Advantix or any other version.
                Revolution puppy/kitten is also safe.
You will need your bunnies weight to figure out dose.

Don’t use any spray, as bunnies are consistent groomers, and most sprays would irritate their respiratory system.
Also definitely don’t use Frontline (fipronil) it is fatal to rabbits.
Don’t use anything else unless your vet says so.

In terms of getting rid of all the fleas:
Vacuum thoroughly, use a flea powder if needed, and empty the vacuum immediately after. If you use powder, sprinkle it on the carpet, wait at least 30 minutes, then vacuum. Wash sheets and any clothes that are out, pillow cases etc, those little buggers can get everywhere.
Keep bun away from the rooms you are vacuuming for awhile after, until you are positive you got all the powder up.

                Hope this helps!

Depending on where you are and whether or not it requires a prescription you can buy it online, I do and I’m in Australia.
Revolution Puppy and Kitten under 2.5 kg/5 lb. The only advantage to buying from a vet or pet store is some will sell single ampules where as online you have to buy the pack.

Thanks Tessie! Maybe Ill buy advantage for her as well, do you think its ok to give to her so young? I guess I could always call a vet and just ask without making an appointment, I will be traveling  quite far to a great exotic vet when I plan on spaying her, but other than that I don’t want to make a far trip for something that’s not a huge deal like this. I just don’t want her being itchy

thanks roberta! I suppose my best bet is to find advantage or the puppy and kitten. If I buy the advantage Ill need the dog advantage right? And on the box it says which to buy depending on your dogs weight, so I guess Ill need to buy the lightest weight right? she only weighs 2 pounds or less, shes 11 weeks old.

Not sure about the dog Advantage. There is one specifically for Cats, Ferrets and Rabbits Under 4 kg’s….. Being a baby I would stick to the Revolution.

oh ok, so my best bet is the revolution puppy and kitten then? Its around $40 from what I can find for 4 doses!

We really don’t recommend dosing this yourself, especially with a new bunny, who I am assuming will be a baby. The first time at least, the vet should give you the proper dosage.

New rabbits need to have a baseline vet exam sometime within the first month or so. This is especially important if it’s a baby bunny who hasn’t had a vet exam before. Baby bunnies are prone to intestinal parasites. The vet will test for this at his/her first exam.

I would probably work on eliminating this issue with the dog/cat and inside the house before worrying about treating the bunny directly. When you take him/her to the vet for that first exam, ask about getting some flea treatment then.

And to clarify, you do have a rabbit vet lined up, right? You don’t want to bring a bunny home until you have found a vet within reasonable driving distance.

she has already been to the vet for her first check up with her current owner. And no I dont have one lined up yet because there are none near me, I have been researching a bit the past couple days and making calls to find one I like. I think I have found one who is knowledgeable and I like, shes also really nice! But her current vet is 4 hours away so that’s why Im looking for a new one because I cant drive to that one alot, due to my job! I think the flea bomb I used today helped alot and I gave the cats and dog advantage. I will only be buying the bun advantage or something if the fleas pursue! And if i do buy her some I will be calling a vet to ask about the dosage before I give it to her, and yes she is between 11-13 weeks.

I’m glad you have this pretty much figured out! In the future, giving your dogs and cats a Dawn dish soap bath will make the fleas jump right off in the bath tub which is pretty cool (and really cheap). Revolution is a great brand though and it’s always great to know your bunny will be clean inside and out
