        Hello,

My 8-year-old dwarf rabbit has started to develop this weird brown, flaky residue under his fur. He is shedding, and when I pull a loose clump of hair, there it is! I don’t know what this is. it is only on some spots on him. Best I can describe is it is like the white flakes that mites leave, but dark brown, thicker, and stuck together. Is this serious?

He has pretty bad arthritis, could this be something to do with him not being able to lick and clean all of himself?

I have had arthritic bunnies who can’t clean themselves like they used to but I have never seen the brown flaky residue. I know sometimes with molting, flaky sections can happen. I also don’t recall the “brown” aspect, and obviously this is new to your bunny too since you have seen this in the 8 years you’ve had him so this definitely seems like something a rabbit savvy vet should check out.

Is he on pain meds for his arthritis?

Yes, he is on metacam, as he is also suffering from a tumor. where it is placed, nothing can be done, so he on metacam for the pain. I have actually only had him less than a year, I got him and his companion from a woman who was moving and couldn’t take them with her.

                Ditto.

Are you still in touch with their former owner? Maybe she could tell you if he’s had anything like this before.

Is the stuff waxy or more scab like?

Fur mite does seem a strong possibility, given his immune system is likely taxed due to the tumor.

What type of tumor does he have?

{{{Vibes}}} for your bun. Hope you’re able to resolve this and keep him comfortable.

yes I am still in touch, she never mentioned it, but it may have cleared up before. I would say the stuff is more scabby. We actually can’t tell for sure what sort of tumor it is, it’s in his right nasal passage, but I suspect it is cancerous, as he has lost a lot of weight.

We have an absolutely amazing exotics vet, so I will see if I can get it checked out.

PS: The bunny in my avatar photo is him.

                    He’s very very cute!
More {{{vibes}}}. Glad to hear you have a good vet.
