So last summer, I rescued my Nellie Belle from a litter of orphaned bunnies from the shelter. (they weren’t actually at the shelter when I got her, but at a local flea market that they sometimes take the rescue animals to) They didn’t know anything about her parents or what breed she was, and they guessed Lionhead because she was so fluffy and tiny. The vet said the same, and that she was about 4 weeks old. When she turned around 3 or 4 months old, she started losing her fluff, and ended up not looking like a lionhead in the least! Now she is 8 months old, and weighs 9 pounds. She’s huge, and looks absolutely nothing like a lionhead! I’m just wondering what breed she looks like to some of the more experienced bunny owners here. We’re debating on whether or not she is a mix of a larger breed of rabbit, as she is so heavy and is larger than two of our cats!

Nellie a while after I got her, she was already much less fluffy, but still tiny.

Nellie now! Her ears are huge, and she has far outgrown the area that she sleeps in, and we had to move her out of the cage in my room and into a room of her own. Can anyone help solve the mystery of what type of rabbit she is?

I still see the lionhead in her… She has fluff on her cheeks and “skirt area”.

With that weight, those ears, and you knowing that she is part Lionhead, I would venture a guess at Lionhead-NZ mix. NZ is just your basic big bunny. While most people think of them as white, they can be orange/brown as well…

I also still see longer bits behind her ears. I would guess lion head, crossed with a larger breed, maybe flemish giant.

The baby pic definitely makes me think lionhead cross. What a cutie pie!

Definitely a mix of a Lionhead and a larger breed! Like Beka said, could be a New Zealand, or even a flemish (the big ears and longer face really look like a Flemish), but it’s hard for me to imagine the parents, a flemish and a lionhead working that out!

                    Haha, BB! Right?!

This must have been a shock for you, Retro… You’re thinking, “Oh, I’m going to have a cute little 3 pound bunny!”

Nope… Lol! You have a cute “little” 9 pound bunny!

It is shocking! The man I got her from told me she wouldn’t get past 4 pounds at the most. She’s still adorable though, even if she does scare my cats to death being so big! Haha

Just beautiful. Need to see more pictures of this girl!

I agree with possible NZ or Flemmie cross with lionhead. Also Palomino or Standard Rex cross lionhead. Lots of possibilities really.
