Well, if noone else is excited, Bam might be. I finally dried some veggies. I got a bag of kale and dried it in the oven. Hope I didn’t burn it. It didn’t smell charred, but looked dark. Well, the O in OCD has come out again, and I got so excited I went back to the store to get more, partly because the bag I got yesterday had a use by date of today, which I hadn’t noticed. It was in good shape, so I found the last 2 bags at the store were marked for today, and asked if they’d reduce the price, and they gave the bags to me for $1 each (they were $3)  Woo Hoo!  It takes hours to dry in the oven, so the oven’s pretty much been on all day and it stinks like boiled broccoli. Bleh!!!

My hubby said, “I’m not eating that %#*& ” and I assured him I’m not either, but I think Gracie will and she really needs more dry food. Well, Gracie isn’t so sure about it, but the other pigs are chowing it down. “Munch munch munch.” Sounds like bunny potato chips or something. Sooo funny. But the smell is gross until you’ve been in for a short bit and get adjusted to it. Almost time for bed. Hope I don’t wake up to this stench in the morning, too.

Good on you MB! That’s awesome you gave it a go! and $1!  Bargain!!!!!!! You just made me laugh about the smell – when the daughter visits, before I even say hello, it’s “can you smell anything?” worried that we have gotten used to the Henry/rabbit smell within our walls! Ha ha ha….
Wishing you sweet dreams tonight and a fresh smelling kitchen in the morning!  Cheers.

My vegan sister loves kale chips; I was thinking about trying them myself. I can sympathize with the smell as my SO loves steamed broccoli/cauliflower with his lunch–I often come home to that odor in my kitchen.

Boiled cabbage of any kind stinks, I do agree. I’ve never dried such a serious amount at one time though, but whatever I dry, keep the door to the kitchen closed and the balcony-door open and the fan going. Maybe you should lower the temp a bit in the oven, although if the bunnies like it, it’s probably fine. Hope Gracie will too soon!

I’ve never made kale-chips, you’re supposed to put oil on the leaves before they go into the oven, I think, and it’ supposed to be delicious. In Sweden kale is typical of Christmas unless you grow it yourself, so it’s hard to find in stores when it’s not Christmas. But I’ve read that it’s become really trendy in New York City and such trendy places in the US, so I hope it will become popular here as well. People make smoothies with it (although then it’s raw and doesn’t stink). It really is an excellent veggie for people as well as bunnies.

I’ve dried worse things though, when my dog was younger and we wen’t to a lot of obedience courses and agility and stuff, I used to boil and dry kidneys for her as treats. THAT was a stench.

Am I just weird or just super love my veggies? I love the smell of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower steaming away on the stove. YUM!

How long did it take in the oven? Mead loves fresh kale, I wonder if she would eat that?

AndHenry, we can all tell you that you’re just weird!!!

Beka, “unknown” said to bake at 275. I was afraid that would be too high, especially since I read elsewhere 125 . So I compromised around 220, them part of the time lower. Then I got frustrated waiting and bumped it up to 240, waited another 1/2 hour and now I worried they burned, but the rabbits ( most of them) ate it. I guess in retrospect I’d try 240 for an hour, them knock it back a bit for another hour, but I check every 15 min. after 2 hours. I just used a cookie sheet. I’ve heard of cheesecloth, clothes pinned to a cookie sheet, and maybe you need good ventilation for thicker stuff. Bam said she hangs herbs in a closet, so I have hung up cilantro AND left it laying out on a cookie sheet for a week + and that works too. Probably better than baking more cookies, given my sweet tooth

I wonder if you could dry them with the oven door cracked open a little bit? I could take advantage of the heat to warm my freezing house! Lol

Beka, that’s recommended when you’re drying mushrooms. It gets the moisture out and speeds up the process, since the point isn’t cooking, just drying.
