Hey! SO I need some advice from my fellow bunny owners?? We just got a 4mo old puppy today and Im wanting to see the best ways to introduce my bun to the puppy? Today I just let the puppy go around the house and get use to the scent of my bun and tonight after I put the puppy in the kennel I will let my bun roam around and smell. Im so nervous cause my bun is my baby who I have had for 2 years and this is his territory, I have three boys who really wanted a dog so I am really wanting this to work. TOmorrow the puppy meets the vet for his checkup and shots and the vet sees my bun regularly so I have a list of questions for him but I wanted to see from you all from your past experience. Thank you!

I don’t have puppy experience with the rabbit, but I do have puppy experience and bunny experience separately. When I introduced my dogs to the rabbit, it was very easy, as they were already adults and listened very well. Having the puppy and bunny getting used to each of their smells is great. The rabbit will be less likely to freak out about the weird smelling creature, and the puppy will have at least an idea that he is not the only furry in the house. 4 months old is a perfectly trainable age, so once the basic commands are followed everytime: sit, stay, come, down… and NO (haha), maybe add “leave it”, I think it would be a good time to begin face to face intros. I would do this on a leash, keeping full control of the pup at all times. Even if the pup isn’t aggressive towards the bun, puppies are full of energy and could hurt the bunny with a misdirected pounce, or even chase the bun wanting to play.

If you find the puppy is more laid back and not extremely energetic, it might be ok to let the rabbit and pup have free roam at the same time (with supervision). But I would still be sure there are safe zones for the bun to easily escape the pup, like hidey boxes with 2 exits, tubes, etc. From what I have observed thru videos online, and listening to other multiple pet households, many times the buns will be the ruler of the house. They can be quite intimidating! You would need to gauge the reaction of the pup, whether or not a lunge from the rabbit meant as a warning will excite the puppy into play-mode, or put him in his place (from the buns perspective).

I’m sure others here will be adding their experiences!! Good luck!! And Welcome to BB!

Hi! Thank you so much for your advice. I have been letting each of them get use to the scents and I did let them meet face to face as I held my bun and my husband held the puppy. My bun was not a fan and the puppy wants to play. I know it will take some time and I was reading on some pages that sometimes it takes months.

Welcome! What kind of pup is it?

I’ve had mixed success with my pup (now 1.5 years old) and my rabbits. We did a great job of getting the bunnies used to the dog at least. At first they were afraid (well, one of them was afraid) but my husband sat in their room and gave them treats while I worked with the puppy. Now they love the dog and aren’t scared one bit, though they are still nervous if new dogs come into the house.

The dog is another story. He’s a hunting breed and is still way too interested in the rabbits. He’s spent a lot of time being rewarded for being calm while watching them through a gate, but I don’t trust him out in the same room as them. Just be prepared for that to happen. I think part of the issues it that he’s young and high energy, so any other animal (even another dog) would get him excited and rowdy. I’m prepared for it to take years before he’s calm enough to be out with them. A lot of that depends on the individual temperament of the dog.

He is a mini pin/possible yorkie terrier mix. The terrier is what scares me cause I grew up with a cairn terrier and when he saw a rabbit he wanted blood. The vet told me to just let them meet and let the rabbit show the puppy who is boss. My bun immedietly ran under my bed and comes out for a snack and back under the bed he goes. The puppy took a nap on my couch and my bun ran around and played for like 20 min so that’s a good sign
