My bunny Oliver has been going to the vets because he seemed to have a bit of an ear infection, this was over the course of about 3-4 weeks, he’s off the antibiotics for about a week now, ears are clear and doesn’t have that floppy bunny syndrome thing although he does occasionally go a bit ‘wonky’.

I’ve not had him out the hutch or actually picked him up in the last 2-3 days due to weather, I’ve had to keep him quite covered up. Took him out in his playpen today and noticed a dramatic drop in weight and body size. His hips are showing in certain positions and I can fit my hand around most of his body with little difficulty.

We went and bought him a new indoor cage because I don’t think he’d have made the night outside, weather’s still not great. He seems a bit happier, doesn’t really like outside anyway besides the grass eating part, but he’s weak and I’m still worried.

I called the vets for advice but i think the consensus is he’s better here with me where he’s comfortable and I can watch him and feed him as much as possible.

Basically need advise on what I can feed him to help him gain weight faster without making him sick. I was thinking my mum used to give her mini lop a bit of toast, I’ve heard maybe peanut butter, although worried about the sugar content…that kind of thing.

Any help would be appreciated and hopefully some attention and the worming tablet will help him.

        Thank

No toast or peanut butter. It’s good you brought him inside – rabbits are better monitored and better pets inside.

Why are you giving him worming tablets?

I would up his pellets if it were me. What is his current diet by the way?

Yeah, definitely no peanut butter or toast. I agree with Sarita that increasing pellets would be the best option, as they are pretty high in calories and nutrients.

What did the vet say? Rapid weight loss like that isn’t normal.

Lulu has had trouble with ear infections. Last summer she had one, treated it, and found out it was actually pastuerella. With several antibiotics we got her healthy, but I needed to get her weight back up. She had lost a pound and a half in the matter of a week, and she’s normally 5 pounds (a holland lop). The best thing to get their weight up is pellets because they are higher in fat. Up the pellets and that should help, but continue to really keep an eye on him.
