I’ve only just noticed it this winter so I’m thinking it might be when she’s cold, but I have a space heater so it isn’t usually too cold. The fur on her back sticks up and she looks extra fluffy. I’m not sure if it’s a grooming thing or what. If I start to pet her, she puts them down but I don’t understand what it could be. I work with dogs and when they do that, it means they’re overwhelmed or feel threatened but I don’t see a reason for my bun to feel threatened while she’s just hanging out with me or lying down..

It could be static electricity from the space heater. I don’t think rabbits fluff up either like the Halloween cat look. I didn’t really know dogs did that as well.

Is her fur just sort of standing up all over? Leopold does this when he’s loafing. I always assumed it was like when a bird fluffs up to keep warm.

Wooly has little bits that stick up sometimes, but those are cowlicks from Leopold sucking on his fur. o_O

I know the last week or so Bumpy’s fur is charged! I thought he looked extra fluffy too and when I went to pet him on his head, as my hand reached the top of his head, the hairs on his back started moving towards my hand. At first I thought he was sticking it up, cuz when I went over his back, it laid flat. But I realized when I lifted my hand the hair was following. It’s really dry in the house too, lots of coughing going on around here and headaches too. I really should get a humidifier. I guess if I had carpet throughout the house, I would be getting zapped!

Sometimes my bunny looks extra fluffy when he’s shedding? Like the hair is out of of place. So I just pluck off the loose pieces and he returns to normal smooth haired bunny.

Porky generally gets fluffier in winter. Then he sheds. That doesn’t seem to be what you’re talking about though.

I think most mammals have a certain instinct to fluff themselves up when cold and scared. Humans even retain the instinct even though we lack the fur. Goose bumps are actually caused by teeny tiny hairs trying to fluff up.

My buns look extra fluffy in the winter. I’m not sure if it’s because they have a thicker coat, static electricity, or that they are puffing themselves up for warmth.
