        Hi there,

I hope this is posted in the right place… I’m trying to find any spaying/neutering programs in BC (Victoria-Vancouver etc) that are funded/low cost. If anyone knows any and could post them that’d be awesome. I’ve been researching for an hour and haven’t had much luck. Even then, could anyone possibly tell me the approx. cost of spaying/neutering rabbits in Canada? That’d be awesome as well. Thank you!! xo

          Hi!
Well, I’ll tell you this right now.
Spaying & Neutering programs are often rushed and pets are left on the tables to wake up. The job is cheaply and poorly done and some animals even die. Would you rather pay 50$ and have a rabbit that has complications (could cost another 100$) or a dead rabbit? I really don’t think so.

You need to get your rabbits fixed at a regular exotic pet vet or a vet that specializes in rabbits and/or rabbit spays and neuters.

Spay/neuter costs vary too greatly to really give you a quote for your area. Even vets within the same city will vary according to their overhead. The best thing would be to call all the exotics vet within your immediate area and ask their fees. Get clarification if the quoted price includes the preliminary exam, surgery, anesthesia, take-home pain meds, and follow-up visits if they are necessary (for example: if the bunny pulls out the stitches and needs to be re-stitched).

I am not sure if there are any low cost options there, but have you tried contacting local rabbit rescues to ask if they know of any?

BunnyRabbitMania, I am not sure where you heard this info. Low cost options/programs are definitely something to look into. Sometimes you get a certificate to take to ANY VET you want, but the clinics generally do an amazing job as well. I do recommend that people explore all of their options. Of course, the final decision is theirs and it is their responsibility to do research about the vet/clinic.

Must agree with Beka here. The spay/neuter program I went through did have their “regular vet” they would sent people to, but I lived so far away, they worked directly with the vet closest to me that I was happy with (which is still 2 1/2 hrs from me). All I had to do was pay the difference that they didn’t cover.

I’d start off googling “low cost rabbit spay victoria” and go from there…

Where in BC are you located? There aren’t a lot of programs, unfortunately. I’m not sure what the SPCA offers. I can direct you to great low-cost vets, though.

My rabbit was done at the Humane Society and the surgery when prefectly! Low-cost or funded doesn’t always mean bad care. If a vet is just doing it cheap for the cash grab that’s different.  Mine cost was $60 for a neuter.

Or you can just contact your locate Humane Society directly. I’m sure they will gladly help you. Most major cities in Canada have a program that includes not only cats & dogs but rabbits as well due to the growing number in shelters. They will gladly help control the populations.
