So I have a variety of questions about my little man Jack…

I had him neutered about a week ago, I thought it would make him more cuddly and such. (According to Petland he is about 7 months old). The neutering seemed to do the trick! He was so good, and cuddly and he would listen. I took him to Cochrane for the weekend to visit my boyfriend and he did great. He played and ran around everywhere and he did his first “Binky.” I was so happy that he was happy. Now that I have taken him home (after only two days in Cochrane) he wants nothing to do with me. He’s mad and runs away and destroys his cage. I don’t know what to do, I’m trying my very best to make him happy but I need suggestions as to what to do next because I don’t know.

Secondly, he does not want to get litter trained. He poops and pees all over his cage. Is there any tips or tricks that anyone knows that would help us out. I try my best to let him run but I’m afraid that he is going to pee as soon as I take my eyes off of him. So potty training would put my mind at ease  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thirdly, I’ve only had Jack for just over 2 weeks now and I want him to bond with his mommy. I’ve been through the process with dogs (which usually ends up being the hand that feeds them) but what are the best techniques to bond with my bunny?

Fourth, how much time to bunnies need to wander. I’m at school a lot so I’m afraid he is not getting enough time out of his cage. He is out and running whenever I am home but I’m just curious as to the about of time that is suggested.

Thanks so much for all the help!

Right now, untill you can completely trust him with chewing, bathroom etc… I would only let him out when you are nearby or are watching him. Bonding with your rabbit can be simple or complicated but with work he will eventually be comfortable with you. I just started my simply laying on the floor as If I were dead with treats in my hands. After a while the curiosity will get to your rabbit an he will come sniff you and maybe jump on you. Try feeding him and petting him gently. I found that my rabbit likes to be pet very gently and soft as I I were barely touching him. Not all rabbits are like this but after I found what he really likes he really started to be friendly. Once he figures out that you mean treats and cuddles he will eventually love you. As for his surroundings It may be a lot for him to be in so many new places in only a few weeks so he will eventually settle in. Give him lots of activities and toys and he will be happy. Good luck!

Do you have bedding down in his cage? That can sometimes confuse them as well. Remove all bedding and only use whatever you are using for litter in a litter pan. Place the litter pan in the spot where he is going the most, absorb some pee with a paper towel and put into the litter pan and also sweep up the poo and place in there too. Clean any mistakes up with vinegar/water mix to completely get rid of the smells. Since he was neutered just recently, it will take some time for the hormones to calm down. You should notice improvement gradually over the days and weeks to come. I think they say hormones will still be fluctuating for up to 6-8weeks after surgery.

With all the changes going on with your visiting your boyfriend, the actual trip itself and the surgery, that’s quite a lot for him to adjust. Time and, if he’s treat oriented, treats will help him trust you. Rabbits like a routine but they also vary so much in personality. So a lot of changes might be a little harder on one rabbit than on another. Time, patience and consistency are the key!

It’s only been a week, his hormones are going wild!
Give him a bit of time and he’ll be fine

I can’t give too much advice, but I can tell you my experience. It took Ziggy about 3-4 months to really be comfortable around me. I’m not saying it will take that long with Jack, but be patience. Spend time near him and giving him treats. He will eventually calm down and not be so scared of you.
Also, too much space too soon can disrupt litter habits. I find I need a litter box in every room for Ziggy to use. If he doesn’t see a litter box nearby, he’ll make one for himself wherever he pleases. lol!

I also heard from a lady that sometimes bunnies don’t like specific litter types. Is that true? What kind of litters are the best to use?

Ummm, some bunnies can be picky, but it’s not a big problem. What litter are you using at the moment?
Wood stove pellets and yesterday’s news are popular choices.

Litter preference seems to be different from bun to bun. As long as it’s not pine or cedar shavings or any type of clay.
I’ve used aspen shavings and a recycled paper pellets litter. Both have worked good, but I prefer the paper one. Less odour.

I use Pine shaving. Rabbits usually pick a corner to pee on so if you want to potty train her you probably want too put one thing in every corner and then put the litter box in the empty one my rabbit always pees in the corner and poos but sometimes she will poo outside of the corner i hope that helped good luck

                          Lulu you use pine shavings?
They’re actually harmful to bunnies’ respiratory system, you might want to switch to aspen shavings or wood stove pellets.

Do you think she could get a disease?? I read that they can have pine shavings in their cage and the vet asked what shaving and I told her what I used and she never said anything about it

I have a recycled paper one in the form of pellets. I’m unsure of the name at the moment. He however does not pick one spot to use the washroom he just goes all over. I’ve heard good reviews from yesterdays news, so i think i may give it a try.

Lulu, I don’t think they can get a disease, but the smell from the pine (or cedar) can POSSIBLY damage the lungs. Better to be safe than sorry. You can switch to Aspen if you like the shavings litter/substrate. It’s not any more expensive than pine from my experience.

Pine and Cedar wood shavings are harmful to bunnies, they have toxins that can cause respiratory issues in rabbits and other small animals.
Here’s an article about it: http://www.rabbit.org/care/shavings.html

I put puppy pads in their pee box. works like a charm. Absorbs and kills pee odor. 7$ bag of 30 last a good month. Order from internet size you need.
I have a big rabbit, so I use the 21″ x 30″ which fits the bottom of a lg critter cage perfectly, in my case, minus the wire cage part..

That’s a great idea, Lazee! I might try that, but under my litter. Ziggy would probably have try to taste test the pads if they are out in the open. haha!

yeah, Percy did to at first but more to tear up than anything else, but he mostly leaves them in place now.
