My son and fiancé just bought a guinea pig and brought over a variety pack of hay. Being I have  rabbits they thought I might like to take a sample pack and try one. One was Kaytee Timothy hay plus mint. Both my rabbits loved it and I was wondering is this hay okay to feed everyday? I didn’t try any of the  samples but there was some with mango, cranberry, carrots and marigolds. Are these also ok to feed regularly? I thought of trying one of these variety packs the next time I go to Petco.

I think it would be fine for everyday. I know however those little bags can get quite expensive so I wonder if you would really want to do that :~) Especially if they are heavy duty hay eaters – I think that only comes in a small size bag.

Mint mixed in with hay is perfectly fine for bunnies. Like Sarita said though, it could get quite expensive. You might be better off buying mint separately and using it as a topper.

I will add mint to their hay. Thanks for the tip LBJ10. I only go to Petco maybe once a month or so I was just thinking of trying a sample kit out. Sarita after you mentioned them selling it in small bags I got to thinking your right it would be really expensive. Its too bad they don’t sell that type of hay in larger containers because both my rabbits love it. I haven’t seen either of them eat hay like that before.

I wonder if besides the fresh mint you might try hiding some other things similar to the treats in the hay to what you have like LBJ suggested. The other items are just dried items so that might help with getting them to munch down on the hay more. Sometimes it’s just the actual act of foraging that helps get them to eat more hay by hiding stuff in the hay.

You mentioned trying some of the other varieties, such as hay with added carrots.  I don’t normally buy Kaytee hay, but I thought I would try a small bag of hay with carrots when I saw that it was on sale. First of all, there were too many carrots in the bag, and I didn’t like the consistency of them at all. They were rubbery. I ended up picking out all of the carrots and trying to salvage some of the hay. I don’t know if all of the bags of hay with carrots are like this or not, but I’ll never buy that again. I’ll stick with Oxbow or APD hay.

The reason they are rubbery is because they are dried and that is what happens to a carrot when it’s dried like that. Just Veggies (brand) dehydrated carrots are better, small and crunchy. You can just buy a dehydrator and make your own hay toppers though, way cheaper in the long run.
