Hi
So my buns nails are getting long and i was thinking about cutting them i have nail trimmers but i am really scared
I was thinking for the first time trimming i should pay to take her to the vet and then watch and see how she does it but i am probaly going to take her in to get spayed at 4 1/2 months do you think that is too long away![]()
I am not sure how long your bunny’s nails are or how old your bunny is you could wait to get them cut during the spay if its not too far off. I did that with my girl bun. Mine cut them for free. You can try yourself and just snip off the tips. It might be a good idea to take them to the vet to see how it is done if that makes you more comfortable. I personally gave up on cutting mine myself and took them to the vet it was only 10 dollars and some change. To me it was worth it because it was a fight just to cut a few nails here and there. I have two rabbits myself. Also if you could get someone to hold the bunny and you trip them that would help as well. Best of luck! ![]()
My rabbit is 2 1/2 months old do you think that is too long to wait??
You can take your bunny in for a new bunny exam and have the nail clipping done then. The majority of vets require an exam prior to surgery anyways.
Ok do you think i should do the appointment now or do you think i could wait 1 1/2 months??
Had she been to the vet yet? You want to take a new bunny for a first exam within the first couple weeks to make sure he/she is healthy and ask the vet any questions you have about her care. The vet will also discuss spaying with you. Not all vets spay that early. The majority won’t do it until about 6 months.
No she has not been to the vet i think the place i bought her from took her in to a vet office already she was really young when i got her i think 5 weeks i have had her for 2 months do you think i should take her into a vet office for a checkup because i have the place picked out to spay her but they are known to over charge for check ups and do you think for a spay 135 dollars is a reasonable price??? Sorry for all the questions ![]()
I would go ahead and take her in for her check up and have the nails done then.
I would definitely take her to the vet anyway for a check up, they’ll probably do the nails for free then anyway.
It’s probably a good idea, the vet can let you know she’s healthy and confirm that she is a girl (haha!) and just generally make sure everything’s good.
$135 is actually a good price for a spay.
Don’t just have the vet do her nails, ask him/her to show you how to do them.
That was really helpful thank you!!!!!
Do you think that if i took her in for a check up i would still have to get one when i spay her because i dont have that much money so i don’t think i could
The 135 is one price with the spay and meds too
I can’t speak for everywhere obviously but at my vet they do a check up the morning of the surgery to check the bun is healthy, but that’s included in the price of the spay.
You could call your vet and ask ![]()
Ok thanks
i have a budget so my parents wont pay for it
i think i may get appointment i need to call ![]()
Hi There,
Some vets recommend bunny bloodwork and some don’t. But you’ll want to know ahead of time if they are going to try and talk you into extras. Likely the check up would be additional expense if they’ve never seen the bunny before. That probably won’t be optional but the bloodwork should be. You’ll just want to decide these things ahead of time.
A pet store may trim the nails for less. The restraint ( less is often better) is harder than the nail procedure.
Oh, and $135 is cheap. My vet is $150 but one in the city quoted me a high end of $470 before the exam, but it would have been bloodwork too I think.
You can do it! I have faith in you!!!!
I usually sit on the floor and put my feet together, forming my legs into an ‘o’! Put your bunny there and snuggle a little! Introduce him or her to the cutters slowly, this means rubbing the cutters on their face and over their back to get them adjusted (obviously, close the scissors and gently rub this along their forehead) then, hold the front leg gently in your hand, using your thumb and index to separate one nail at a time from the fur, and clip it 5mm above the quick. I like to use a nail file to even the edges as usually the cutters leave a jagged and uncomfortable edge.
Continue along! Turn the rabbit around and give a but rub, then do the same with the back feet. Be gentle, remember, rabbit bones are fragile. Be patient and kind.
You can use banana too… it keeps them calm

^watch this. Its a how to.
Well i went to the vet and they said they would give me a free check up appointment So i think i am going to pay to get her nails trimmed and then try it myself but then they said they will cut them free when they put her under for the spaying so i will do it both times
Oh that’s good! Yeah, while she’s under, might as well have them clipped. Have them show you how they clip them at the check up appt.
You can also check with local pet centers if you find yourself too uncomfortable to do it. I pay $5/bun to get them done there. My boyfriend and myself know how to do their nails but I become so anxious just holding them while he does it. I prefer to just pay to have it done. I think it’s better for all of us.
Yeah at the vet office i go to it is $10 i can not afford it so i am gonna have to do it myself
very scared haha ![]()
Just do a little at a time in the beginning. It’s not the end of the world if you nip one a tiny bit. We all cut nails too short. She won’t bleed to death. 🙂
