Myself and my wife are putting all the research in now for a potential move to Canada after I’ve finished uni (So, in 2-3 years, but more realistically, around 5 years time) We live in the UK currently.

There is a lot of information regarding pets like cats and dogs, and similar ‘pets’, but the information on bring rabbits with you seems somewhat limited…
There are conflicting reports that rabbits need to be quarantined upon arrival, some literature points to “home quarantine”.

And there are conflicting reports about travel, apparently, rabbits would go into cargo, as opposed to in the pet/animal hold…

I was just wondering if any of you binkybunners have any in-depth knowledge about immigration from UK to Canada for animals?!

Any insight would be MUCHLY appreciated!

Not a clue. Sorry. I do wonder if what you’re reading is referring to rabbits as livestock though.

To be honest, there doesn’t seem to be any difference… “Rabbits” appear to be handled by the Canadian Foods Inspection Agency… Which is somewhat unsettling… There appears, from what I’ve read, to be no other governing body for bringing rabbits into the country… :/

But still, their information is still very unclear and far from easy to follow… :

RetroSquid, do you an embassy near you you can go and ask? Or even email? Immigration also has an awesome service through phone, but I think you’d pay a lot by calling from another country.

I have no idea yet. Just thought I’d see if anyone on here had any experience with it at all… Will be contacting the official people over the next few weeks/months anyway.

Have you thought about coming to the states and then crossing the border into Canada via car or something? I don’t know how that works for immigration though? For some reason if you take a bunny from the US to Canada there’s no quarantine or health certificate or fees required but if you bring a rabbit in from another country (not the US) you have to have a health permit and there is period where they must be quarantined and you have fees to pay.

Of course laws may change in the next 2-5 years but it’s great to keep an eye on this stuff and prepare.

I think that is just how they are set up for any animal coming in…in the US the US Dept of Agriculture is in charge of pets. I guess it’s the government so it’s not supposed to make sense LOL. It appears all pets are regulated through that Canadian Food Inspection Agency. I imagine that when these agencies were established they didn’t even deal with pets but as pets and immigrating have come up the government has just had to find a place to regulate and manage them and they just put them where it makes the most sense to them.

They’ll still know your port of origin, since you have to go through a specific immigration process and it lists where you’re from. But people are pretty nice. Mine was at the Toronto airport and was quite a swift process.

I had a friend that traveled with a cat from Colombia it was fine, no quarantine or anything. But I think the biggest issue with Europe is that it has animal deceases that North America hasn’t, like myxomatosis. That’s why I don’t have to vaccinate my rabbit here, but you do in Europe.

North America has myxo, it runs rampant here in oregon in the spring/summer. It’s just that there are no vaccines approved for it here.

Really? Maybe it’s just Canada, then? That’s what I was told regarding vaccines.

Yup! We have myxo here it’s just not as common as it is in the UK or Australia.

Bunnytowne – In Oregon we have issues with it. If you are concerned you could probably contact a vet in your area and ask if there are any issues with it in your area. I don’t think you have much to worry about because it’s not as common here in most areas.
