› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › What is wrong with my bunny’s pee?!
I think I asked this question a while back but its worse this time. My rabbits pee is totally RED. No yellow, no orange- pure red. Is this blood or something? And if it is not, what could be causing it? I will try to attach a picture if i can
Bunny urine can be brown, red, orange, yellow, ect… It’s normal.
Most pics I’ve seen of bloody bunny urine it’s speckled/splotchy throughout instead of purely red.
Here it is. I took too long to clean her litter box and I guess she had to go… so she went on the floor
I’ve never seen it myself, but apparently it’s really common:

I’ve not encountered that colour before….Is it all the time ?
I really feel that any time there is a concern where you are unsure if vet treatment is required then the best solution is to ask the vet…
Make an appointment but a few hours before you are due to go put down a clean empty litter box and if she uses it put some into a container to take with you as a sample…
What color is it when it dries? If it dries red it’s probably not blood. Do you feed her beets or othe strongly colored foods?
Strawberries?
When it dries its red yes. This only happens sometimes and when it does its mostly orangey-red. This time it was full red. The only thing i can think of in regards to diet is that this time the romaine leaves were very green in color. Also she skipped a few days without having mint and romaine because i ran out. And then i bought it again like 2 days ago which is also around the time this started. Could it be because of the sudden diet, she hasn’t had those 2 veggies for a while and then suddenly got them?
When I give mine dandelion greens, their pee turn red. The plant pigment that causes this can be found in other plants too, but I’ve mostly seen it when I’ve fed a good amount of dandelion greens.
Bunny-pee can become reddish for no apparent reason too, then porphyrine is responsible for the colour, but it’s still not regarded as a cause for concern.
I didn’t think of this before, but since winter came, my bunnies urine has been uniformly pale in colour. In the summer when I’m able to feed them a greater variety of greens, the colour of their pee vary a lot.
Mine always pee browny-red, like a kind of rusty colour. That looks REALLY red though. Maybe worth a trip to the vet just to be sure?
I already posted that link LOL
Ok so this “red” pee thing is still going on and its worrying me. I assume that its pee because its red throughout and there are no splotches/specks. I did recently add bok choy to my bunny’s diet though. But today was probably the most red pee she had ever done, it even stained the fur on her butt red. Does anyone have experience with actual blood, not just pigmented urine? If someone can show me a pic of real blood in the urine that would be very helpful! B/c I cant tell the difference if its blood or just pee!
Hello!
What is your rabbit’s diet? Everything, from the proportion of hay to pellets and all the fruits and veg!
As well, what kind of toys does your rabbit have access to?
Caged or uncaged?
Spayed?
Any other signs of an abnormal rabbit?
Is your rabbit a bottle drinker or a bowl drinker? I would make both available as dark urine could also signify dehydration. If however, your rabbit drinks an excessive amount of water, it could also mean another health issue such as a thyroid condition
It is honestly really common for a rabbit’s pee to range from yellow, to dark red (like in your picture there) it is often a symbol of too much calcium in your rabbits diet. This includes things like collard greens, kelp, kale, spinach (which should only be given in LIMITED quantities), broccoli, celery, etc.
I recommend phasing back the veg to one type (maybe try dill for now). See if the problem persists and slowly bring these items back into your buns diet.
Also, if you are using an alfalfa hay… stop using it. Grass hays are much better for the digestive tract and should help with the red urine.
Hi,
My rabbit has access to unlimited timothy hay (but barely eats any) and she has 1/2 cup of pellets- I know this is kind of a lot but she is thin! For veggies she usually has romaine, cilantro, and mint everyday but recently there was no more cilantro in stock so I replaced it with bok choy. This she has 1 cup of, but I split it into two feedings so 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. She doesn’t have very many fruits, only 1 tsp of apple probably once or twice a week. This is because she used to get soft poop when I fed it everyday.
She is unspayed but will be done soon. She is caged throughout the night, let out in the morning. There are no other abnormal signs. I have a water bottle and bowl available although she prefers the bowl. And she drinks a moderate amount of water.
Is too much calcium bad for rabbits? I am not sure if the greens I feed her have high calcium. I will try cutting back on greens if maybe that is causing the problem. Thanks for your help!
Rabbits shed excess calcium via urination. Kale is fine to feed everyday. Calcium really only becomes in issue in rabbits that are pre-disposed to bladder sludge/crystal issues.
I think you are overworrying yourself about this. A vet visit might be in order if you want to put your mind at ease other wise I wouldn’t fret. The amount of greens you’re feeding sounds fine (greens help keep rabbits hydrated too). Bloody urine usually has dark splotches of dried blood in it and is NOT bright red. Bright red blood is fresh blood and peeing out that much fresh blood on a regular basis… You would have noticed other medical problems.
I found an article for you Marina.

“Red colour of the urine is sometimes observed in rabbits. It is probably caused by a plant pigment and does not affect the health of the animal.”
Red urine is a descriptive term for the condition where a rabbit’s urine varies in color from the normal pale yellow to dark yellow, carrot orange, brown, or bright red. Red urine is not a medical problem. The color usually returns to normal within one to three days, although I have had a couple of rabbits take three to four weeks before their urine returned to the pale yellow color.
