Everyone has thier own opinion, but-
My bunny is a male, I read about the “Its a good thing to fix them” too. But I can’t trust the vets in my area,(because of SEVERAL bad experiences I have had in the past). He’s now almost 2 yrs old, and is fine. They say the reason why you should fix them is to prevent bad behavior, but I have read that it never really gets rid of it (and I haven’t seen any bad behavior to fix anyway). So in my personal opinion, its not worth the risk or exspence unless he has some medical condition that REQUIRES it. Its really no different than fixing a dog, there is no law saying you have to, or visa versa.

Male bunnies don’t need to be neutered for health reasons. If he doesn’t have currently and will not have in the future any contact with other bunnies than it’s not “mandatory” to neuter. Males are more often neutered so they can be bonded with other rabbits or due to behavioral issues.

As for bunnies not making it. It’s recommended that a rabbit only be spayed/neutered by a vet with a mortality rate of less than 1%. The HRS recommends .05% or lower. With a survival rate of 99-99.5% the risk is minimal (and boys usually have a much easier time with it all) but there is ALWAYS a risk with any surgery.

As the other have said, it’s not a must to neuter a male like it is with a female. It varies from bunny to bunny how bad their hormonal behaviors get and how much they improve after neutering. Generally I would say that most bunnies with undesirable behaviors do improve a lot afterwards but it’s not guaranteed.

Our boy had taken to pooping and peeing all over the floor every time we let him out of the cage. The moment he got home from the neuter he stopped that completely and went back to almost perfect litter habits. It was an immediate turnaround that shocked both Hubby and me. Normally it takes about a month for the hormones to even out though.

I also think that it’s beneficial to them psychologically. Intact males are always on the hunt which can become stressful and frustrating for them. Once you take that urge away they are able to become much more relaxed and also allows them to bond closer with their humans.

Everybody has their own opinions on the subject.

We didn’t neuter Porky. Here are the reasons to neuter…

1) Prevent pregnancy. Porky has no access to girl bunnies, so not our concern.
2) Making bonding possible. I don’t want to get another bunny so Porky is going to remain a bachelor.
3) Improve litter habits and stop marking. Porky’s litter habits happen to be great.
4) Prevent aggressive behavior. Porky is the most laid back bunny ever.
5) Smell. The occassional musky maleness I smell on Porky doesn’t seem unpleasant to me, and even if I didn’t like it, it’s only occasional and I wouldn’t put him through surgery over it.
6) Prevent him from humping his stuffed animals. They are his he can do what he wants with them, and it might not work anyway since I’ve had fixed male cats who had exlict affairs with blankets.

Ok… So to interject here… How do you get him to hump the soft toys? Hahaha I’d love to get mine to do that instead of trying to assault my arm!!!

It was totally his idea.  I just put the animals in his condo. 

If Porky had been going after my arm instead of his stuffed animals, we probably would have gone the other way with the neuter.

I’ve tried with the soft toys and my vet won’t neuter him till 6 months… So there are 2 months of crazy little him left! I’m redirecting and giving him time outs to try stop it and its working ok… Hahaha
